yeah lat pulldowns are gonna give you more width i would say, but you absolutely 100% should be doing both

Lat pulls will for sure help the lats more. But as an overall exercise BB rows own. But still Pullups>both for lats.

In a simple answer, both. Effective is a broad term. They will both get you results, but they hit different areas of the lat belly. Vertical pulls generally are better for width, as they hit the upper lat area responsible for the v-taper. Rows tend to give thickness to the lats.
Not saying that those answers are absolutes. It's possible to get wide with rows. You should do both to have both a vertical and horizontal pull in your arsenal. Personally, I don't get results with BB rows, so I do t-bars, db rows, and lat shrugs. There's plenty of lat exercises out there; no need to just pick one, as there is no single greatest. They all have their pros and cons

Totally agree, I was going to say the same. Repped (I also do pullups with a wide grip for width)

Have you tried rack chins for width? I've been doing them for a while now. Great exercise to have in your arsenal

i voted for the barbell rows.
the pullups and the pulldowns are great exercises (i love them, really), but my lats started growing only after i started rowing with the barbell. although by that time i was doing quite a lot of dumbbell rows and cable rows, it was the barbell rows that made the difference, even with less poundage.
but, of course, as all of the above posters said, it's best to have both types of movements.

I'm leaning towards lat pull downs because of their simplicity. Of course, if you can hit the rows better than you can definitely pack on some solid mass.
I do both. I'd like to fill in my lower lats and add more thickness... I'm talking about Franco Columbo thickness and insertions... only thing in my way is genetics.

Lat pulldowns for width and rows for thickness...so my vote was lat pulldowns.

BB rows, pulldowns suck. If pullups were the other option though, id choose them.

they really do 2 different things.. Lat pulls are gonna add the width, to where rows will add the thickness.. Both are necessary

Wait, are dumbell rows not better for hitting the lats than barbell rows? Overall, I do not think that barbell rows are that great at hitting the lats, the only time I feel my lets getting worked with them is when I use my lats to control the weight on its decent.

Charles Poliquin:
"One problem with the barbell row is that it's really hard for people to just use the lats and elbow flexors. They always unconsciously start to drive with the quads and use their glutes and lower back. The second thing is that the bar either hits your gut or your chest, which restricts your range of motion. The better way to do it is to just use the one-arm dumbbell row."

I would have to disagree. Personally, I think CG chins are gnarly for biceps

EDIT: As a general rule of thumb, if you find yourself agreeing with Goju on just about any matter, you're probably wrong.

my favorite new lat exercise is taking a hammer grip handle ( the one used on cable rows) and putting it on a pullup bar and doing pullups that way
i like it bc its the closest grip possible and i really feel it in my lats
also you have a shorter range of motion at the top so it takes out the biceps at the top IMO giving you all lats
plus you can do alot more reps on this and add alot more weight
