Grunge is sort of a hybrid version of punk, so if you like Nirvana and Alice in Chains, you will probably like most of the other stuff around that time peroid like Sound Garden, and all the other bands coming out of Seattle. The older punk stuff was in the late and early 70s and was mostly bands coming out of the UK with influence from American bands in NY and LA.

Might wants to check out NOFX.
Also I dont see that many people talk about them but there's an old band called The Meatmen who put out some hilarious stuff many years ago. Their front man was a guy named Tesco Vee and he was a real nutcase. Dont expect great musicianship but these guys put out some very funny, rockin' stuff.

if you like the ramones and sex pistols you will also like the damned
the dead boys, the buzzcocks , iggy pop and the stooges, the dictators, generation x and what not. I guess that would be considered the first wave of punk. I really like early 80s orange county stuff like social distortion, the cramps , the germs, tsol etc..... I also like early 80s uk stuff like discharge, peter and the test tube babies, the 4 skins, GBH( my favorite) these bands are all on the harder side, if you like that stuff there are hundreds and hundreds of bands that I can tell you about, punk went off in 20 different directions somwhere in the mid 80s with skate punk ala NOFX, dc hardcore ala minor threat, all the "dis" bands from northern europe, I like terveet kadet the most but there are many to choose from. If you listen to any of these bands and want more names just post and I will reply also , listen to the mc5 ... most people that know what they are talking about ( ie me) consider them to be the first punk band.

Not forgotten, just don't like them as much. I think they are more popular in America than they are here. I really like 'Thee Michelle Gun Elephents' lyrics.

Although that is a good album and I have it and like it too, it's certainly not real old school.

We should probably add Minor Threat to the list. Probably one of the best hardcore punk bands ever. I was listening to them before the gym last night and thought it would fit in with this thread. After listening to that you will never want to listen to the crap they call punk today.

Yea, they are great, you ever seen Another State of Mind, the movie about youth brigade and Social D's tour in the 80's, they have some footage of Minor threat in that.
