    oats vs. rice

    Which do you use more as a carb source? Is one better than the other while bulking?

    No, they both contain different vitamins and minerals. It's best to vary your carb sources.

    Agreed. It's not good to just stick to one carb source.
    Rep system sucks, we all agree, the only ones who really use it are idiots who think it makes a difference

    I've dropped rice from my diet and just have oats as a primary carb source. The brown rice I have available to me cooks absurdly weird, I could leave it on for 10 minutes or 3 hours and it still comes out really grainy and not cooked right, I don't know why :/ Theres plenty of water and everything, I just dunno. Maybe I'll get a rice cooker and bring it back. But anyways oats for me, throw them in the microwave for 30 seconds on high in hot water and theyre done. :}

    Yeah, microwave rice steamers are awesome. So much more convenient and more importantly it gives nice rice.

    Question

    What do you guys put in your oats when you make them? I used to like to put sugar and butter in them, but that kind of defeats the purpose of eating a healthy meal unless I put very little of each. Any ideas??

    I grew up eating oatmeal with sugar and butter too, but now I use Splenda and a little Smart Balance Light.

    haha yes, oats are so wonderful you can just keep going for quite awhile. But I for some reason don't typically like rice, so I have to vary between oats,yams/sweet potatoes, and beans It really is unfair to say one is better than the other though as they both offer different nutrient profiles.

    I make porridge with milk (instead of water), and then add some honey - Great meal for the winter, too!

    When cooking my brown rice I mix some diced tomatoes and black beans in with it. Gives it more flavor so it's not so plain. I use a little brown sugar on my oatmeal for flavor. Is brown sugar a no no?
