Gain 20lbs. of Muscle in Two Months?

    Hello,
My name is Mike. I'm a brand new Bodyspace member. I'm glad to have discovered this resource; it's been a great way to get my stats, goals, thoughts, and progress all down in one place. It also seems very encouraging, and every bit of motivation helps for me!

I've just started working out at the beginning of this month. I had worked out before, but not with much consistency.

I'm already seeing progress and feeling great. One of the goals I put down in my profile is that I want to gain 20 lbs. of muscle in two months. Can anyone tell me if this is a realistic goal?

    Thanks!
    Mike
My workout sessions are so vicious, so auspicious, and so clankalicious!

It can be done but it will take some time to do if done right.
I believe and therefore I do.

You can make some significant gains over the next few months but to be honest I don't think 20 pounds of Lean muscle mass in that time is doable naturally, unless you were a competitive bodybuilder in the past. So much of bodybuilding is nutrition and your diet is probably not dialed in at this point to allow you to make the small adjustments you would have to make to gain that amount. That's not saying it's not possible but it's not probable.

Welcome, Mike. You'd be VERY lucky if you could put on 20lbs of muscle in one year let alone, 2 mths. But don't let that discourage you, 20lbs of muscle is not the same as just putting on 20lbs of weight. Anyway, be realistic about your goals and do the best you can to achieve them!

I have seen it done but only by people who were once big - layed off training with an injury or because they got lazy, and then they start training again. Muscle memory is a beautiful thing!

Sure, eat like a cow and lift like a bull, get plenty of rest. I gained 8 pounds since Friday and hope to hit 20 in 2 months also. It can be done.

20 pounds in 2 months, I don't think I could get my diet straight in less than 3 months. Take these first months to get your diet, training and rest all worked out and you will see better gains. You should see a loss of fat and an increase of definition, that will make it look more like you gained 20 pounds of muscle.

    I started lifting after a 6 month layoff on 6/14/07 - bodyweight 285 - bodyfat 21% about 227 lean mass

on 7/14/07 - bodyweight 310 bodyfat 18.5% - about 252 lean mass that is 25 lbs of lean mass in one month.

Ahhhh that's just noobie gains NM.... And the muscle memory helps a lot. That's what I was saying "unless you were a competitive bodybuilder in the past" or power-lifter etc.

I've been working on gaining weight since early March. I've gained almost 15 lbs. which is around .8 lbs a week. Most is lean mass but I have noticed the love handles are a little more jiggly than before. This is my first attempt at actually gaining weight. My hope is to lean out after I reach my goal. I can't even gain 20 lbs. in two months but everyone is unique. Good luck.

Thumbs up I am hoping for 10 in 2 years!

20 pounds? - I am simply hoping for 10 pounds over the next 2 years. I have been working out a long time, but just in the past year have I truly been bodybuilding for competition. Doing a show in late October and then taking at least two full years off to eat clean and train heavy as possible. Being 41, putting on quality muscle is difficult, but an extra 10 pounds on stage looks pretty impressive! I have always just trained for health, so it should be interesting to see what type of growth I can accomplish.

We are all different and some people are lucky and can put muscle on faster than others. I just know I am going to have to bust my butt for every pound of muscle that I put on my frame, especially being a lifetime natural athlete.

Good luck to you, eat quality foods, train hard and supplement. After training meal is essential or the work you just did just went out the window. Feed the muscle right away.

    Don't Worry - Be Happy

I have heard a lot of theories, some conflicting, others complementary. My own goals have shifted from strongest to leanest to "all around great" etc. If you have never lifted seriously - probably not a realistic goal. Too much to learn about your own body and how it responds to what mix of diet, training, rest, and "other stimuli" (visualization, supps, stress, stretching, etc).

I see a lot of folks use creatine for the first time and see rapid shifting of water from outside to muscle to inside muscle with little other change and show bodyfat reduction as a result. Are they really "gaining lean muscle"?

I believe others who have lifted a longer time also have the "infrastructure" to grow muscle faster to previous levels. I heard something from someone here that made a LOT of sense to me (think it was on Aries thread):
You should set a goal you will see and like - not a number by itself. If you thought you looked awesome and a lab coat tech said your bodyfat was 30% would you feel worse than if you thought you looked terrible but the tech said you had a 12% bodyfat.

Just keep pushing, learning, and growing and you will achieve your goals. That is why I love this stuff so much! and typing too, I guess. Sorry for the "lecture"! Good Luck!

You guys won't believe this but....

Originally I had asked if it were a little too ambitious of a goal to want to gain 20lbs of muscle in two months.

Well, it turns out that I've actually gained 26lbs (hopefully of muscle ) in one month!! WOW!

My wife made some comments to her family at our baby shower this past weekend, about how I'm starting to get a little "bigger" and more muscular. Her family noticed as well, and they all began to guess how much I weighed.. figuring somewhere between 185 and 195. Considering I had weighed roughly 185 since I first reached that weighed at age 18.. that was definitely a safe bet! LOL

185 was actually my starting weight when I first began working out last month (July 8th).

So I hop on her Aunt's digital scale.. and the thing reads 211.2
I couldn't believe my eyes!! Neither could they! They all looked at it as I hopped off and on again several times.

Her Aunt asked me where I was hiding it all... then I flexed a double bicep. They get it now! LOL

I haven't done a bodyfat measurement.. but judging by sight.. and the fact that I don't look any fatter (LOL), I'd have to assume that this is muscle. I've been literally busting my @$$ six days a week, since my initial soreness went away last month during that first week.

I think I've shattered my goal... SWEET!!! Now all I have to do is cut it up by late next month. Easier said than done.. but hey, I've come this far! I'll try and get some updated pics on my bodyspace tonight.

    Thanks for the encouragement peeps!
    mj
