Career in Business?

I'm at a point now where I'm very seriously considering different career paths and business is something I'm very interested in. I'm 16 years old, heading to University in a couple of years, and it's very expensive and I want a clear vision or direction for myself.

I've done a fair deal of research but I wanted to hear from some members here who have a good idea when it comes to the world of business.

I am thinking of something perhaps in advertising, or starting my own business as an entrepreneur...

My question(s) is: What are you opinions, and thoughts on business in general and specifically, what careers should I consider looking into? Lastly, what type of courses should I be taking in University, specifically?

Again, I've done MY research but I always like to get opinions.

Business is a joke. A degree in business is practically useless. To even be employable (sp?), you need a masters. Then you will start off at about 35k.

But if you feel that a Business degree is all that you can get (either you are lazy or stupid), at least get a minor in Information Technology. It is easy, and makes you a little more employable (sp?)

If you really want to do something. Get a degree in like math or physics. Contrary to popular belief, math and physics is not that hard. It just has a mystique about it...

COMPLETELY untrue. Don't listen to this guy...

I know plenty of people who have "just" a bachelors degree in finance, marketing, management, etc... And they are all well off. Very well off. If you want to be making ****ty money, get a math degree and become a HUGE money making math teacher.

Business degrees are probably the most employable degrees that exist.

you better be someone special or know people cause whther or not its the most employable degree it's also the most common, most universities are spitting out around 800-1000 business students every year. I have a friend who just graduated w/a marketing degree and aint doing a hell of alot w/it. Like it was said be4 u r looking at 35k to start, you can go up from there but it takes alot of effort.

Spoken like a true business major....

and you are a liar if you say you know plenty....unless they are 50..

your stupidity is about to make my brain explode....

a business major on average makes 30k after graduating (that is less then a manager at mcdonalds).....a math/physics major makes on average 80k with after 5 years of experience that goes to 108k

after 5 years in business you are lucky to be at 45k......

please grow a brain you stupid f*ck

Well,

I have an MBA and I make around 200k/yr. I agree with you and disagree. I think success in general comes from being a little eclectic. My undergraduate work was in biology, so I found myself selling software and hardware for biological research. It's a very small industry, so there aren't many qualified people out there. Do I use my MBA? Kinda. Did it help me make more money? Abso-****n-lutley.

A Business Degree in Finance or Accounting usual net 45-60k after graduate depending on your class placing. I know 2 people who graduated last year that are making 50k in accounting right out of college...

I wouldn't encourage a business degree, as i know lots of people who have a business degree but don't use it. But of course it depends on what type of person you are, however don't think that a business degree will guarantee you a job

Listen kid, what are you majoring in? How much money are you making?
Someone that gets a business degree may be lazy and stupid, but at least they dont live in their parents basement using up their internet bandwith while downloading episodes of Dawson's Creek like your punk ass. Please respect any form of education and shut the fluck up. Your opinion is not valid. Don't try and say that your not living with your parents, choad.

Sincerely,
The Business Man

If you get a degree in accounting or finance you will have a nice job. If you get a MBA, you will have an awesome job, they are in demand...

Im a Health Care Administration major...Its like a Business degree specified for the healthcare industry...
But what do you mean, by those who don't know how to use it? They aren't taking advantage of it or they aren't doing the right things or looking in the right places?

How about an I.T degree, is that any more useful? All i kept hearing about was demand for IT specialist..but then again it seems to be on par with B.S when it comes to popularity at Uni's..I think..so too many ppl taking it.

If you really want to do something. Get a degree in like math or physics. Contrary to popular belief, math and physics is not that hard. It just has a mystique about it...
This is funny

First off, business degrees are in demand, especially right now. Of the top ten majors for finding employment after graduation, business majors had 5 in the top ten. Accounting and finance was in the top 5 and marketing was number 8 (Im looking for the article, I'll post if I find it). A masters making 35 a year???? That's laughable. If you get a masters, especially in an in demand field such as accounting and finance then you my friend will be well off. Business makes the world go 'round.

And another thing, whats the deal with start rates?? It's funny how all these high schoolers laugh at 35K a year. 35 K is pretty good money coming out of college. Especially if you happen to be privileged and had sholarships getting you through college and parents help. Relatively debt free, coming into a job making 35 K a year is pretty good. Add to that, a lot of business degrees have a high rate of promotion. I personally know a people in marketing and sales and finance who have received promotions in Fortune 500 companies (ie. Ford Motor) within their first year. My Fiance is due for a promotion (she majored in marketing), and it will bump her to 25 an hour(granted she is a contractor, so it is not benefits but still pretty good money).

With Business there are a multitude of things you can do. If you work hard enough, get a great education (including masters) there is no reason you cant move up the corporate ladder and be making big bucks one day. Go for a business degree if you want to. I did and am very happy. Take note, this is not a knock against other majors or courses of study, however it is just idiotic to say that a business degree is useless.

P.S.- Again, not to knock math and physics majors, but what kind of job would you do with that degree? Especially making 80K a year to start. I find that very hard to believe, so I was just hoping for some clarification here.

graduates with a degree in civil engineering were the most successful at finding work after graduating in the UK.

the worst, not suprisingly, was media/drama/the arts.

Business degrees are probably the most employable degrees that exist.

true, I about negative repped his ass for insulting this Marketing student. I have got plenty of friends that started off close to 40k with just an undergraduate degree. math or physics hahahahahahaha

Don't be so caught up with working for the man, do your own thing and you can have whatever degree you like. Buy or start a business and you are the boss and are paid whatever you are worth. I agree a Business Degree can make as much as a freaking Mcdonalds Mgr. Don't get a BUsiness Degree whatever you do. Specialize in something and get a Masters in Business if you want.

contrary to popular belief common sense is not that common, if you cannot apply what you know , what you know is useless

dont pay attention to that, go to www.monster.com and look for entry level positions. the thing with a business degree is that you have to be willing to go where the first job takes you.

Exactly, which may be "as much as a McDonald's manager". However, what happens then? Are you going to stay at this same job for the rest of your life? I doubt it. Many of us will average 5-6 different employers over our career. Expierence pays, not math and physics
