Who has the widest back?

In the history of bodybuilding, does Ronnie have the widest back and the largest circumference? How wide was Yates, i can't seem to get that information.

Orville Burke had a gigantic back when he competed. I don't think it was as big as Ronnie's back now, but it was when they competed against one another.

I thought Cutler's back was wider than Coleman's in the head to head comparison at the Olympia, but COlemans had better definition

it probably just looked like that since Jay's isnt as thick, so it just looked like a big flat wall.

I dont even think its a question, Jay's managed to get his back to be much thicker than Ronnie's, however he can't even begin to compare in terms of definition

jay actually looks larger than ronnie, but his arms and definition lag behind. What about Yates? No one has an answer for me?

and if Ronnie had thicker skin and more fat like Jay, his would be even thicker. so Ronnie still wins.

If Jay was allowed to come to competitions with the gut that Coleman brings, his back would be twice as wide

there was a guy in the 80's who had nothing but back. musclemag or one of those other bs mags did a top 10 a few years ago for each body part. this guys back was sick. but he looked like he didn't even work anything else. they showed flex, ronnie, yates, i think dillett and this guy blew them all away. any way, you can't talk about awesome backs w/o mentioning dorian yates. i don't know measurements though. david paul had an insane back, too. granted he wasn't a bber but he very well could have been.

i concur, Jay does have a pretty wide (not long) waist, look at the picture, ronnie has a better V Taper almost

Well, if Ronnie had to lose enough weight so that he didn't have a gut anymore, he wouldn't have nearly as much muscle, hence a smaller back
If Jay could put on another 20 lbs, so he had a bigger gut like COlemans, then he would also have a lot more back muscle, and therefore a wider back

I noticed that too, Ronnie's traps are insane

From the rear Ronnie's legs look f'n unbelievable, they don't appear as "bubbly" as they do from the front

there is a difference between a gut and a waist. one reason Ronnie has a big waist is b/c he doesnt train like a little bitch. like 95% of his workouts are heavy freeweight exercises.

I agree big time. Orville Burke had a FANTASTIC back. But my all time favorite will always be Lee Haney because he had huge back with a little waist. You just don't see that classic combination much nowadays.

Dorian Yates has the most impressive back (IMO) in terms of thickness, friends whom I have showed his pictures to say it looks like he has baloons under his skin. Width wise Franco had an amazing back, it was really a stand out bodypart, like Arnolds biceps were for him.

Yes, there is a difference between a gut and a big waist
Jay Cutler has a big waist, because he has a genitically wide waist, but come contest time he has a flat stomach
ROnnie Coleman has a big gut, because it bulges out
Just because he lifts heavy weights doens't mean that he is exempted from abdominal judging

i realize this, but the way u sed it made it sound as if Ronnie was the only one with a gut.

Ronnie IMO never had good abs. even when his waist was literally half the size, i think his abs still never looked all that good. but he owns everybody in everything else.

Lee Haney and Sergio Oliva had monstrous backs. Guys who competed at the '91 Olympia (Dorian Yates' first Olympia - after 8 years' training, he took second to Lee Haney) said Yates' back was much bigger than Lee Haney's ever was.
BTW the secret to a wide back (Dorian's opinion in 'Blood N' Guts') - weighted wide-grip chins, and reverse-grip pulldowns.

Odd you should say that because Dorian was wellknown for doing underhanded barbell rows. Not for doing chins or pulldowns. IIRC he did only like 1 or 2 exercises per workout and only 1 set for any given exercise.

I would have to go with Dorian, especially in 97, his last olympia, even while walking out on stage to pose he looked like he had a turtle shell on his back, CRAZY, here are some comparison pics between dorian, ronnie, arnold, franco, and others

Errrm....he didn't do just ONE exercise for his back. That's wrong about 1/2 exercises per workout - 1-2 heavy sets per exercise was the method to his madness (excluding warm-ups of course). For his back he did Yates Rows, Wide Grip Chins with weighted dipping belt, Seated Cable Rows, varied grips every other workout on the Lat Pulldown, and Hammer Strength Pull-overs.
Rows build middle back mass, chins and pulldowns build width.
