Check out the following article:
http://www.fitren.com/res3art.cfm?compid=18&artid=11
Excerpt: "Plan on losing weight slowly. Everyone wants fast results, but you can’t undo a lifetime of inactivity and poor nutrition overnight. If you lose weight at a rate of 1-2 lbs. per week you will be more likely to keep it off permanently. Many diet programs promise rapid weight loss. High protein, low-carbohydrate diets for example, can take off pounds very quickly, but much of the weight loss consists of water and muscle. Instead of worshipping the almighty scale, measure your progress in terms of body composition. Use your bodyfat percentage as the ultimate yardstick of your success. This will help you distinguish between fat weight and muscle weight. If does you no good to lose 5-6 lbs. per week if it is mostly muscle!"

True.
The goal should be to lose fat not weight. IMHO. Except for in the beginning of a really obese person, fast weight loss almost always equals huge muscle losses.
BAD BAD BAD
Take your time like tracyb555 says.
Russle, for me it was about getting healthy. Well, I'm there. Now it's about really sculpting this body of mine. And slowly but surely, I'm achieving my goals. YOU CAN TOO.
Two words to help you in your quest......DEDICATION and EDUCATION.
This board can be really informative as there are many knowledgable people here who can help. The over 35 section is great as well as the rest of the forum and a real exchange of info helps many here. The motivation starts within, but the support is everywhere, you just have to tap into it.
Good Luck

I am not a doctor but...
Russell,
I am not a doctor so take this sort of with a grain of salt especially because there probably are alot of reasons why you have lost so much weight but my father just lost alot of weight and found out he is Diabetic. Supposedly one of the signs of Diabetes which I never knew is weight loss.
I hope I am totally wrong and that there is an explanation for it other than Diabetes but you might want to check it out just to be on the safe side. But if you have been dieting and doing lots of aerobics etc, than most likely that is why you have lost so much weight. I just have been hearing alot about Diabetes and so I am kind of suspicious about it.

Diabetes
Thanks and I am sorry to hear you have Diabetes. You do have lots of company. I was diagnosed as type II back in July 1996 and I am hearing that more and more people are being discovered as having it. Now six years later I am learning it will turn into type I eventually. As a matter of fact, my doctor seems to be looking forward to me going on insulin. I am trying to do everything I can to delay it as long as possible. I am not a morning person and I just do not have the time in the morning to have to fuss with giving myself insulin shots.
Getting Diabetes when you are 76 is one thing but getting it when you are almost 40 is another. And then, trying to develope a lean muscular physique seems almost impossible. Let me know what you do which helps you shed the pounds and gets you down to a lean muscular physique. I have tried aerobics but it doesn't seem to help much. Also, I am finding that working out sometimes lowers my blood sugar and sometimes raises it. I think the problem is Ketosis. That is when the brain feels there isn't enough sugar in the blood and starts to break down proteins for more sugar. At least that is what I think is happening when my sugars go high after a workout.
I am beginning to agree that higher levels of protein and lower levels of carbohydrates is the way to go even for a diabetic. But I guess we all are diabetic to different degrees. Maybe mine is worse. Anyway, let me know what seems to help you lose bodyfat the most. I am around 208-210 lbs and I suspect that my lean body weight is around 160-170 lbs. I want to lose bodyfat before I consideer putting on more muscle.
By the way, there are two other guys in these boards who also are diabetic.

Just take your time. Do NOT starve yourself. I did, and I'm paying for it even 4 years later. If you stick to this, you'll want that muscle mass back sooner or later, and it doesn't come back easily.

I got him, but mainly because of his dumb statement. I don't mind a resurrected thread so much, as some dumb kid so clearly talking out of his backside.

that thing increases your body's need to repond the envirment. And people do it in different ways. when people get nervous they contract one muscles but others they don't. Making sport is better

I am glad you stated it this way. For me the goal is to get healthy to but never thought about it this way. When I started to work out it was about losing weight but never even thought about the fact if it is to fast then there could be muscle loss. I have a better way to look at it now. Thanks and I will make sure of the two key words DEDICATION and EDUCATION.
