is it normal for thighs to hurt after squats?

    i am new to training.

i am doing 12 reps with 40lbs for squats. for 3 sets.

the next day my thighs hurt, and it is kind of hard to get up out of a chair, but then ususally by the next evening (48 hours after exercise) my thighs have cleared up almost 100% to recovery.

is this normal or am i doing somethign wrong?? my chest exercises and arms don't hurt this much.

p.s. i got chicken legs if that means anything.

yes it is normal for your legs to be sore after doing squats , theyre the most demanding leg exercise you can do ... after my leg work i ride a stationery bike for 5-10 minutes to cool down my legs , this seems to help lessen the soreness.

that's fine, as long as it's not taking you days on end and you're just sore that's fine. after a leg day i have trouble walking down stairs the next day.

are you doing other leg exercises?

I had leg day yesterday, then thought it would be smart to bike 22km today. Walking is more like hobbling right now, and stairs are like mountains. Totally normal.

you should do reps appropriate to your goals, and yes you should always go to failure (just make sure you have bars on the squat rack so if you fail you don't die)

i've found with squats that under 10 reps and my legs blow up (i have chicken legs as well) and i used to do sets of 20 and they got a bit bigger, but much more toned. pretty much the std. deal with lifting weights.

and yeah your legs are going to hurt! especially if you're doing it right...

    Totally normal.
Usually my glutes, quads and sometimes hams are sore for a couple of days after.
Make sure you warm down and STRETCH PROPERLY after every sessiion. Don't underestimate the value of a good stretch after a workout.

do more traps stuff, it will still be a little uncomfortable but you'll have more padding (muscle)
