muscle spasms in upper back/shoulder blade area

I've had 'knots' continually in my upper back area right underneath my shoulder blades. They are always there in some form or another. I've been getting trigger point shots about every 3 or 4 months. Now they are getting really bad almost like a spasm where I can't even take a full breath without it hurting. Is the chiropractor something I should consider? I don't want to have to go every week though like I know they are going to tell me.

Sounds like some inflamed rib joints or joints beside the spine.

Chiropractic should provide relief, but then there are other issues such as posture to consider long term.

Your right, this isn't something that came on all of a sudden. I lost all that weight and started to notice it starting in May. This past week has been hell though. It's to the point that when it has it bouts, I have to immediatly change my position or it feels as if I am going to pass out.

**Update, I did go to the chiropractor last night. He said it is the muscle around the ribs and I might have even tore my lat muscle. That does not sound right, so I am going to go with what Fresch said. I will keep you posted on how everything goes.

    strong bump.

i have the exact same thing happening to me right now. was doing shrugs, good form, only 315 on the bar and all of a sudden it felt like my whole lat/shoulder blade/upper back area just tensed up and stiffened. very painful, breathing made it hurt too. rested, massaged, foam rolled for a few days and was feeling alot better (not fully recovered though). was doing standing DB shoulder presses today and BAM, felt a pinch in my back and the whole area seized up, dropped the weights and now its killing me

    any ideas what this is/treatment???

I have the same problem and its a dysfunction of the serratus anterior and long thoracic nerve palsy. Terrible knots and spasms in the area of the lower tip of the scapula/ medial inferior border as well as pain and crepitiations between the underside of the scapula and thoracic wall. Really crappy injury to have since it effects pretty much all upper body exercises.
It could be something less complicated though like scapulo-thoracic bursitis though.

Get the doctor to test if you have a winging scapula and take it from there.

the issue in the thread may sound like it's different but the answer is the same: the nervous system is having a response to something. the nervous system is a threat response system; so how deal with that? approaches proposed.

    Smile Spasms near/under shoulder blade

Hi guys... yes I have something similar. Even though I dont work out as such I have the pain in my thoraic spine and with that getting spasms.

I have had a MRA and it has shown that I have facet joint damage - T4 thru to T8 and I am thinking that many of you have the same thing. Once I did some research on what type of pain occurs with this problem and how it is caused... well I was a text book case.

I work in a warehouse (lift boxes) and yes over strained that area, even tho I always did pre warm up excercises (and that is due to myself doing a sports trainer course - Level 2 many years ago).
I hope this helps a lot of you guys that you will get some idea of what you are looking at and how it can be treated... I go to a physio once a week, acupunture did not help me.. but each person is different.

I have this now from a 2011 car accident. I've had trigger point injections, a spinal epidural between C7 and T1 last month. It helped my neck, but nothing for my thoracic pain. I have spasms almost all the time. I'm still in PT but no-fault is cutting that off soon. The PT hasn't helped that much at all. I see my pain management doctor in a couple of weeks and he was talking about another epidural in the T7 to T9 area. He also mentioned facet joint injections, which serve a two fold purpose. They first inject an anesthetic into the suspect facet joint and if the pain is gone, that's the place. Then they do a steriodal shot in the joint which should provide relief for a long time, maybe 18-24 months from what I read about it. I'll let you know ehat happens after I see my PM doc.

    Angry Same story

I got in a car accident two years ago and still worked out. After a while I couldnt do anything. My whole upper and mid back and neck had muscle spasms in it. Most of them are still there. I went through acupuncture, physical therapy, and chiropractor. Now its mostly my neck and under the shoulder blade area. I have to get novacane injections and take muscle relaxers. Tried to work out upper body today and hurts like crazy!!! Dont know what to do !

most of you still complaining about pain describe pretty much passive only approaches to recovery.
it might be time to look into an active approach.
