I squat and deadlift in wrestling shoes.

If you squat with a wide stance make sure the soles are flat and there is good lateral support.

If you squat close, most guys like a little heel.

    wrestling shoes

Huh, suprised everyone likes to squat in these. I used to like to wear 'em for deadlifting but felt like there wasn't enough support for squats. The shoes I've been wearing lately are even worse though (running shoes). I will probably just get some new cross trainers.

I use a cross-trainer. They aren't not too spongy and they have a wide base, so I don't feel like my foot will bust out the side.

How about boxing shoes? Anybody try those? They are dirt cheap here, seem to have a flat sole and good ankle support.

I wouldn't recommend the wrestling shoes. I used Asics wrestling shoes for a while, but I started getting a sharp shooting pain in the top of my foot after my workouts. It would linger for a while. My trainger (a champion powerlifter) saw my shoes and told me the lack of support was probably the cause. I switched to Chucks, and have yet to have the pain since.
Not enough support for heavy squats. I don't know what your numbers are, but once you get to 300 + on the squat, I would switch to Chucks.

Interesting... I never really considered the shoe. I just wear a shoe that I picked out to suit my foot type (extremely flat) -- in that the bottom curve is fairly straight, the shoe is laterally rigid, and the internal seam is sewn around the outside.

Has anyone noticed real gains from different shoes? Or are they just for injury prevention?

I was thinking of trying the Chucks. Just don't want to look like a dork wearing them. I should probably just get them though if they're as good as everyone says. They're probably cheaper to buy than crosstrainers too right?

I don't think the foot pain and weight are related to the weight used (in squatting in wrestling shoes).

I'm an old guy (44) competed since 1981. Within the last year and a half I've squatted 572 at 148 and over 600 at 165.

I've squatted and dled in wrestling shoes since I started.

But, the big thing is as long as footwear is stable, use what you like.

That's impressive man, keep up the good work!!! People just don't get "pound for pound" but to me, that's more impressive than some super heavyweight squatting double body weight.

And on topic - I use all black Chuck Taylors to lift
