Dude, if you don't know what you want to do, don't let some dude in a hat tell you instead.

Also, don't go into the military to pay for schooling. I think a lot of people rolled the dice on this one and then got burned by 9/11 and Iraq.

Although there are many heroes in the military and I'm very thankful for everyone that serves, if going in the military is not something that you SPECIFICALLY want to do, chances are you won't like it.

    Think before you jump!

join only if thats what you want to do. not becuase you feel lost in life. if you feel lost, find ur path and proceed to fulfill it.

Do ROTC/National Guard dual enrollment if you want to join. You serve one weekend a month, take one class each semester added on, and PT mwf morning. 95 percent of school is paid for and you automatically recieve a commission in the National Guard as an Officer.

You can go full time or part time. Part time means u cant be an infantry officer but if you go full time obviousily you can.

Combat arms will more than likely be deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan.

Something like a legal secretary probably not so.

I would only suggest going full time if you dont have close friends or arent too close with your family cuz if you get delpoyed youll be mad homesick for a year and could possibly die or be injured. And if you go full time you could be stationed anywhere from Montana, Germany, Japan, Iraq etc.

Like anything else, it's what you make of it.

    Pros:
    + Steady paycheck
+ Can't get fired (unless you really f*ck up!)
    + Worldwide travel
    + Free training
+ Potential skills for a future career (depends on MOS)
+ Retirement paycheck after 20 years
+ Steady promotion and increasing responsibility/opportunities

    Cons:
    - Not the greatest paycheck (not poor, but not rich either)
    - You can't quit
    - Deployments, and possible short-notice travel
    - Training which may not directly help with any civilian career
    - Combat duty, getting shot at, watching friends get injured or killed

In the end, joining the military has to be something you want to do, deep down inside you. It's not about the pay, tuition reimbursement, or travel. You can get all that somewhere else.

Especially in today's world, you need to feel strongly enough about supporting and defending this country that you're willing to put your life on the line, and watch your friends do the same. Every day.

11 bullet stopper here, but I would recommend going Air Force and get a job and security clearance that will be useful when you get out. Don't glamorize it because of what you see in video games and Hollywood.

i have a cousin who served something like 4 years in the army and 2 of them were in iraq. he is out now and about to go to school and the army wont pay for his school or atleast help with the pay of his tuition and books, where he was told that they were when he signed up. he said that there were all these excuses that the army was making and they hide alot of stuff about the tuition assistance area. there are alot of "BUTS". you have to do this, you have to have done that, and if you did this while you were in the army then you will get only this much, but if you did that then you will get this much. i mean he served 2 damn year in iraq. not over sea's but he was actually in IRAQ, the heart of the war and now he is out and when he started asking for what he was guarenteed when he signed up, they all went hiding and making these excuses.

but ya if anything, i would join the Air force. much more high tech jobs and training and great possibilities once you get out.

I really like the Army, and I kind of want to join but the problem is I eventually want to start a business and I wouldn't be able to commit to both. If I were to start a business and I ended up getting deployed somewhere in the Army, I wouldn't be able to put the business on "hold".

but ya if anything, i would join the Air force. much more high tech jobs and training and great possibilities once you get out.
Sounds like he got a dishonorable discharge to me.

no, he didnt get discharged, no where near it, didnt get in trouble or tick anyone off, he served all the years he was suppose to, served this county and spent 2 years in iraq. and just this year, his active duty was done, had the choice to stay active be decided not to, now he has a couple years of non active duty. so he then decided to go to school and the army is paying up to what they told him what he was going to get. their giving him very little, but after he called and talked to certain people and kept bugging them, the finally forked over a little more. but what im saying is, the army or even armed forces in general hide things ofcourse, but there is many things they promise, and they do stick to their promise, but not to the full extent. what they tell you is that they will pay for your college, ive been to and talked to many recruiters, Yes they pay for your college and they make it out to be that they pay for all of your college for so many semesters. but after my cousin got done talking to one of the people he talked to about this school issue, they said they told him that there were many upon many loop holes the army had and they ended up only having to pay for a small % of his education.

Ths post is 99% correct except that you can become an infantry officer (or any other branch that is offered in the army). I enlisted in the guard and later joined ROTC and took a commission as an active duty officer. Between ROTC and the national guard I actually made money going to school and I didn't have any other job during school.

On active duty, it would be insanely difficult to run a business on the side. And basically impossible as a junior enlisted.

On the other hand, many people cite the skills trained and developed in the Army as a great help to starting a business when they get out (leadership, discipline, time management, etc).

And my personal opinion on Reserve duty: Don't do it.
(That's coming from someone on active duty for 16 years and counting)

Either commit yourself fully to Active Duty service, or not at all. In today's world, you will very likely get called up for deployment as a Reservist. That means your "real" life and job gets put on hold. Which means things will fall behind, change, etc while you're gone. Then when you get back. . . You're wondering when the phone will ring again.

Commit to the active duty time. Know that every day of the next X number of years is at the Army's disposal, and put all your focus on doing one job really well.

Thanks for the info. I might join the Army on active, but it depends on how things in my life go in the next few years (I'm 17).

I guarantee you your cousin did something wrong. the GI bill is ran from the VA for all services not the Army. He probably didnt sign up for it when he had the chance, Ive met alot of people that didnt and then wished they did. The only way you will get school paid for after you serve on active is the GI bill, which requires you pay 100.00 a month for the first year in service.

From personal experience and every single person I've talked to who has served (quite a few) no one has been ****ed over with their college money unless they did something stupid while they were in the service.

    Does he have GI Bill?
GI Bill + army college fund?
    Vocational rehab?
Is he in the reserves and getting college partially payed for? If that's the case, in many states, the army doesn't cover your full tuition, especially for the national guard.

There are many variables besides "the army ****ing him over" so you might want to get all the details from him about it.

lol no he isnt in the reserves. he was in the ARMY and served it and served it proudly. he doesnt regret doing it but he is glad he is out. i dont talk to him alot and havent lately, but when i did hear from him, he said he was having trouble getting all the money the army owe'd him for college and that he kept calling them and they were trying to say that he can only get this much, i dunno what they said exactly, but all i know is that he had to keep bugging them until they finally forked over the money to pay for his college. but oh well, i dont really care. he is out and he is safe and he doesnt regret serving this country or his time in the army.

Which is a very important piece of information that was missing from your original post!

In general, I'd just point out that every story has many different details and perspectives. He was mad, so I'm sure he slanted things in his direction (intentionally or not). He obviously didn't tell you every single thing that happened. And you're likely not familiar with every aspect of every program covered under military tuition assistance.

In other words, you really didn't have enough information to form the basis of a "Army has problems because a friend had a hard time getting his promised college" post - especially when the final result was that he did get paid.

I guarantee the military is full of imperfect systems, but the situation isn't helped by stories from people who don't know & understand the full story. . .

I've already re-worded my post to make it less harsh. I couldn't grab the right words when I originally drafted it, because I didn't think your goal was an outright slam on the Army.

The bigger theme of my post was simply that isolated stories rarely contain all the correct information, and one person's "bad" experience shouldn't be used as the basis for a potentially decades-long decision.

I joined the reserves and its got good and bad sides. My plan was to finish college and get a comission, but now Im being mobilized for fy08. so college is on hold, and everything else. I dont mind though, its cool for me. But If you have a real job and career, it can be a bad deal.

if you're on the Misc. section asking whether or not you should enlist or not is not exactly the smartest option. despite that some of us e-buddies are in the military, it doesn't really mean we can convey what needs to be said.

a teared rolled down my face watchin the youtube video. sigh

Don't join for financial reasons, I'll tell you that much. The possibility of losing your life over a few dollars isn't worth it.
