Indelicate subject
I hate to bring this up. Lately, I have been adding more whey protein to get my calories up. However, it makes me fart like mad! I understand why (pure dairy). Do any of you experience this? I don't really bloat, as I drink a lot of water. I'm a vegetarian and get plenty of fiber, so I don't have bathroom issues. But sometimes, if I have my whey after my PM workout, I'm farting all night long! Help!

What level of vegetarian are you exactly? Iask because you supplement with whey which is derived from cows(animal) milk. If this doesn't matter than it might be the particular protein you are taking. Some of the higher quality proteins have digestive enzmes and what not to help solve this problem. Optimum nutrition Pro complex being an example.

I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, so I do consume dairy (well, just cc, whey and eggbeaters. No milk or icecream! Occasional yogurts). The thing is, I used a rather inexpensive brand, Body Fortress, and that didn't bother me as much as the EAS. I actually think I may be drinking it too fast. I go to the gym after work. I do 45 minutes of weights, followed by high interval training on the treadmill for 20 minutes. Then I down one serving of whey mixed w/ water on the way home before having dinner. I drink it pretty fast.

Make sure you're using a whey protein isolate. It's the easiest on the digestion. If you still have problems, you might consider egg white protein and avoid the whey altogether.

Ok ,thats good to know. The body fortress I have had before and in my opinion it tasted well, like nothing lol but you might want to seriously look into either the optimum nutrition pro complex or BSN lean desert(low carb). Great products at affordable prices as well. You might want try for the next couple of days taking your protein shake either when you get home and then your dinner 30 mins later or with your meal. since its whey protein you are taking it wil be absorbed and used by your body all the same. Remember you have 30-60 mins after you workout ot get your protein/carbs in.

Polinutri, hey! Welcome to da club, girl. I had that too. My poor hubby had to sleep elsewhere I am not a vegetarian though, so there could be other explanations. I attributed my excessive flatulence to the sudden increasing of daily calories, not to too much protein powder.

I take a probiotic and use Dynamatize Elite whey, which has digestive enzymes..it's really helped cut back on the gas...now egg whites and broccoli...different story!

Maybe it's worse for me as a vegetarian because I generally get a lot of fiber. On most days, I get at least 50 grams. Oh, well. I'd rather fart and have good muscles than not, right!

It's because your body isn't digesting it properly. Take some digestive enzymes prior to drinking it. Or even directly after. Or switch to soy. Also depending ont he brand, some gas cases can be worse than others. I have IBS-C and anytime I start to drink my whey with milk, I get bad gas. But if I take my enyzmes like I should, I have no issues. Only 50 grams? Around these parts, depending on what your doing, that's not a lot. When I'm on a routine and my diet is matched up, I get at least 130-180g of protein a day. Not going under 100g. And at 5'4 and only 90lbs, I'm assuming you're trying to put on some weight.

Yeah, 50 g of protein is NOT enough for you...try to shoot for 1 g. of protein per pound of bodyweight or at least .8 g

You know when I first started really increasing my protein I had those same issues. But, come to think about it, I haven't had them in a long time. It may just be a waiting game until your body gets adapted to the change. I use EAS as well (Myoplex RTD).
Good luck!

activated charcol caps can be helpful at eliminating the smell and the gas (you can get them at any drugstore) and I found taking active culture probiotics really helped with my lactose digestion.

Thanks, guys. I found that if I drink the whey slowly, it isn't as bad. I think gulping it allows me to take in more air, which leads to the "problem."
