someone once told me that taking a hot shower right after you work out is bad... something about it killing some of the progress you made in the gym... or some crap like that...
it was a friend of mine back in college...
so ever since then, I don't take a shower for at least an hour after I work out...
Now... I've read stuff about what a hot vs. cold shower can do for your muscles... but I'm just asking... is there any reason I shouldn't take a hot shower RIGHT after I work out???
thx

In fact, it has the opposite effect. Taking a hot or at least a warm shower after a workout has a sort of whirlpool effect. After a workout, blood circulation throughout the body decreases as the blood gets trapped in certain parts of the worked tissues/muscles. Metabolic wastes and hydroxyproline, if you want to get scientific, also gets trapped within the muscle membranes.
Now hot water, above 96 degrees fahrenheight, has a vasodilator effect in opening up the constricted blood vessels for blood transport throughout the muscles so the metabolic wastes can be removed. When taking a shower, apply hot water to the worked area for up to 6 minutes and you'll see a major difference in decrease of soreness and improved recovery the next day. It's a good idea to stretch passively and statically(no bouncing) while the shower is on.
But it is a good idea to first cooldown with some light cardio for 5-10 minutes , then take the shower, don't jump into the hot shower if you are heated directly after a workout. Wait until you reach body temp. again and let the sweating calm first."Knowing is not enough, one must apply" ~ Bruce Lee

No, the muscles pump comes from blood being engorged along with metabolic wastes, which is what you want to get rid of. These are waste products ( electrolytes, water, urea, CO2, free radical chemicals) that the body does not need. After a workout, yes you will get a pump but the pump will consist of these waste products with the blood. The blood isn't carrying any nutrients anyway, except for the waste products. So in order for your muscles to absorb nutrients from post workout drink and meal, you will have to get the blood flow out back to your heart and stomach for absorption, since the blood is emptied of nutrients."Knowing is not enough, one must apply" ~ Bruce Lee

That article does not even say hot showers are bad. It offers a potentially better alternative , contrast showers, where you alternate hot and cold bursts of water for several minutes as tolerable. That does not imply that hot showers are bad. The reason for the cold water after hot water is that you want to constrict the blood vessels again so it will open up for better circulation after applying hot water again, as in a paired process."Knowing is not enough, one must apply" ~ Bruce Lee
