how effective would it be compared to say running or biking? i was originally thinking of doing elliptical but someone on here said that ellipticals don't use the whole body and as such are ineffective when compared to running. i'd rather not do HIIT on treadmills since its hard to judge what one's max is and the temp out here these days is 90+ and i'd rather just not do that lol :P
tips/advice/comments?

X2, the better one you can program in a sprint speed and all you do it hit that sprint button and it changes speed, after your 30 seconds is up you hit that button again and your back to your regular pace...

IMO, that is one of the best cardios ever!
best = hardest
hardest = most effective
You use your whole body, it's exhausts your quads, glutes, lats, forearms, biceps, and more!
And it also wears out your lungs and it's much easier to get this "I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE *PUKE* " feeling than ever on the treadmill. (Wich is pretty much what you want when doing HIIT)
And also, you shouldn't do HIIT on a treadmill. You should be able to control your speed and effort more than on the treadmill, cause you can be able to push your self harder on some days than others.
So instead of changing the speed on the treadmill f.ex from 4mi/hr to 12mi/hr every 40/20 seconds (or whatever time you use) you can just row as HARD AS YOU CAN everytime, and not be paced by the machine. (also works for cycleing, sprinting outdoors, burpees and almost everything except for the treadmill)

I usually put the Resistance at 10 and go as fast as I can for 45 secs. Rest for 30 secs. Rinse. Repeat. I do this for 20 mins and it really kills you.
Just remember to maintain good form throughout. Try to find one next to a mirror. If you bend your back forward during the eccentric part of the exercise, you'll find your back starts to hurt after a few minutes.
