What are we really suppose to look like?
I was wondering if any of you ladies would share your measurments with me. I want to know what is normal, small and big. Like waist, calves,THIGHS,and arms. I want to know where I stand right now and really start to make sure I am even. I am 5'5 and 135 by the way. thanks girls!

No such thing as "normal". Asking everyone else for their stats is just going to set yourself up for failure and frustration. You shouldn't compare yourself to others.

I agree....It's taken me a long time to start figuring out that I shouldn't compare myself to everyone else. I have to be who I am.

never thought about it like that!
Thats true...My hubby just talks about staying even throughout your body. So you don't have bigger lower than upper...and etc. Plus I always just worry about whether or not I am a bigger girl or average. Probably just need to concentrate on my fitness goals and not obsess over my weight!!!!!! Arg!!! Thanks for the insight ladies!

The idea of a 'normal' body type is a social construction. What should be desirable is a healthy lifestyle that works towards making your body (mentally and physically) more healthy each day.

hi Tracy
I agree with the other girls about comparing with other girls...don't do it.
What your husband is talking about is symmetry. Just look at yourself in the mirror. If you feel like anything is standing out(either over or under developed) then work on that area. Like for me for example...my calfs just look dwarfed compared to my upper thigh. So I've been training them overtime to even them out to make my legs look more symmetical.
I hope I was just a little bit helpful.

I aggree 100 % with the idea of a 'normal' body type being a social construction.... and that it can be frustrating...
However, I personaly found that comparing myself helped me out a lot.
Of course I compared to someone in similar shape/size... then post a picture on my fridge or locker... It helped me stay focused.
The key is to be realistic.

I totally agree. Just work hard, and results will start to happen. I am still learning patience. It is so hard for me to know that I am improving my body day by day instead of just wanting it to happen OVERNIGHT!

Exactly - and that includes not aiming for unrealistic goals...
And although I agree that to a certain degree, comparison with other competitors can help you identify your area's of weakness/where you lack symmetry it can also be non-productive in terms of overall self-image.
So if you are a 5'2 endomorph there is no use staring at a picture of a 5'8 ecto-meso as inspiration as it will only set you up for failure!!
So you should always keep in mind that you are aiming to improve your body to create it into the best IT can be!

I'll tell you what. I am my own worst critic. My boyfriend tells me that I am way to hard on myself, and I need to see all the improvements that I have made and not focus so much on what I still want to improve, and not compare myself to other women.

What's normal if feeling great about yourself! It isn't a physical perfection as much as it's a spiritual/mental contentment. The physical healthiness is something you will desire and enjoy as a product of the contentment, but you will not, I repeat, will not beat yourself up because you're not reaching some ideal that isn't the ideal for your body! The ideal for your body is feeling great, being fit and healthy, and being happy for what you are!

I do have to admit. As much as I do cringe at my flaws. I do also find myself flexing in the mirror with a big ol smile on my face because of the accomplishments I have made so far!

your all supposed to look like anna nicole (after weight loss, hehe). Big boobs, skinny arms, skinny legs, full booty, tiny waist, like the girl below.

You're an idiot and a very shallow person. It is far more important that a woman have confidence in who she is. Moronic comments like yours do nothing to help. Real woman should not look like porn stars a lovely smile and and the ability to provide them ...

...that sums it up pretty good (except the anna nicole thing.. last time i saw her on tv she was a fat ....) anyway the butt is definitely the most important... closely followed by the boobs. nasty cellulite(?) should be kept at a minimum....(not there). goodluck.

I think everyone has a pre-conceived idea of how they want to look. Whether or not they are realistic goals will ultimately decide the sucess. There are alot of things to consider when you are determining your goals and the levelheaded people will undoubtedly achieve them. That being said, I think a womans self-worth and confidence go a long way in determining how alot of people will view them. These things seem to be the first things that I notice about someone when I meet them. I don't believe there are any standards because we set our own standards. We our often our worst critics and usually are way too hard on ourselves. Anyone who is making efforts to better themselves should be proud of that fact and take criticisms with a grain of salt. So Tracy I say set goals you can reach and once you attain them, set the bar a little higher and revel in your achievements. No need to match measurements, when everything is right on your body, you'll know.

What is that guy thinking posting on here. We were obviously not asking what men think we should look like. We were simply all talking about body image, etc.
So men, unless we are in the general forum area asking about what body types men like..... get a life and stay out of the women's forum. Your comments are as worthless are you are!

How about for a guy like me who comes in saying that if you want to train, then just develop yourself to the best that you're capable and don't try to fit any one cookie-cutter mold and ultimately that's what's going to please you best; not anything somebody else tells you that you should look like?
Hey, not all guys are like that asuguy. Well, unfortunately, there are a lot of men that are like that but not all of us are such yutzes.
Oh, and to you ladies that aren't natural blonde, don't bleach your hair just because a lot of moronic men think blondes are "hot". All you need to do is be you and that's plenty hot enough.

And this comment is mature? Maybe you mean well but you are not doing anyone a favour by giving advice on what a woman should do or not do.
If we bleach or not should definately not be your concern at all.
You might not be like the obvious badass guy..but maybe you are one in disguise who is usually even worse because they "pretend" to have our wellbeing in mind when all they do is manipulate on a more sophisticated level.
MEN..do not concern yourself with what women should look like and post it on here, because we are not interested.

No, actually, it's because a lot of guys think that blonde is better and some women buy into that nonsense; so, they bleach their hair trying to fit what some guys think they should look like. Don't you think that would be the wrong reason to do such a thing? I really wasn't telling anybody what they should or shouldn't do other than saying you'll be better off finding for yourself what works for you and not listening to what strangers tell you that you should look like.
I really just wanted an answer to my original question anyways.
Hey, you ever want to say just one thing but then after you say it you keep talking for a bit more than you intended? Well, maybe I should have just stopped with the one question. Hokay? How about we just pretend that I asked only that one question and then I didn't say anything else? So let's just discuss the answer to just that one question. Please?

Ladies, ladies. Take it easy. If a guy asks another guy how he should look or what is normal, the guy isnt gonna tell him the truth. He'll just say, "look how you wanna look!" Same thing with woman. They'll tell each other "Whatever makes you happy!" In reality, this is not true and I will explain.
Ask any female what they think a typical man should look like and 9 out of 10 times, "Must have a nice body" will be one of their responses. Same thing for us men. We want a lady with a "nice" body. This isnt being shallow or imature. This is reality. With all of these magazines and T.V shows, men see good looking, fit and toned women all the time. So it would only make sense to say that's what we would except from our female counter parts. Same holds true for women. When you girls see a good looking guy on TV with a hard stomach and you look over at your "Lump" of a significant other, I'm sure deep down inside you wouldnt mind if he would have a stomach just like that too. Again, this is just one example and it is just my opinion. What gets me upset is that women aren't honest with themselves and everyone else around them. YOU DO care what men think. And when we voice our opinions, you ladies alway get on the defensive. My girl told me a few months ago that I had gained a few pounds around my mid-section. I immediatley started to eat good and do intense cardio again until I dropped the extra pounds. Not only did I do for me, But I did it for her. If we were to critize you, forget about it. And if you didnt care what we think, then why do you wear make-up, color your hair, wax, get lipo suction, breast implants, go tanning, work out, etc...? Please don't start bashing me because I didnt write this to attack any of you. If you ladies want to know what I think is a perfect body, I'll tell you that it's NOT these victorias secret supermodels that are all skinny and anorexic looking. I prefer more of a body type such as Leeann Tweeden or Jodiann Paterson. Both are voluptuous with thick hips, nice butt and not too skinny!

I don't think anybody on this forum is saying that it's okay to eat whatever you want, never exercise, and look like a total slob. We're saying we shouldn't compare ourselves to each other because (for example) no matter how hard I try, I will never look like Imperfectly Lou. I have a "nice body" and so does she, but we look totally different. She has different genetics, her bones are lighter, her hips are smaller, her muscles are longer and leaner than mine. If I try to compare myself to her as my ideal, I will always be frustrated because I have a heavier skeletal structure, shorter "bulkier" muscles, and wider hips. Instead, I should be the fittest person I can be and not compare myself to others.
(Hope you don't mind me usuing you as an example, Lou!)
