    Muscle culture in Albuquerque, NM?

Is there any kind of muscle and bodybuilding culture in Albuquerque, New Mexico? There are a lot of gyms for a city its size, but I don't see much evidence of muscleheads. Almost no members from New Mexico on various bodybuilding forums, almost no personal web sites or personal photo galleries from New Mexico bodybuilders. There have been a couple of national and pro bodybuilding competitions there, though, so there must be some of local muscle scene.

Anyone from that area have any insight?

    Thanks,
    Big Matt

    Albuquerque

There are quite a few gyms, I guess, but they are all pretty small. Compared to the gyms I'm used to, that is...and I'm from Texas. So maybe it's just because everything's bigger there...? lol...

Well, really, there's a good number of bodybuilders here. They may not be online because the entire state of New Mexico is pretty damn poor, on a per-capita basis. And to be on these forums, you gotta have a computer and the internet, y'know? If you're ever in the area, try going to Defined Fitness. I may be biased b/c it's where I work...but Gold's Gym is too ghetto here & too full of roidheads (no offense to Gold's Gyms in other areas, I know they aren't all bad!!) Pretty much other than that, Liberty Gym is a very good place to go. New Mexico Sports & Wellness is lame, from a bodybuilder point of view. Too much racquetball and cardio machines, not enough weights.

Kay, I will have to agree with you to some extent on gyms in your area. I've never been to the one you work at, but Gold's isn't my cup of tea, at least not in Albuq. I do however go to the gym at the Air Base when I'm in albuq. and have always enjoyed working out there. It's true that NM is a poor state, but almost everyone I've talked with in local gyms within the state has computers and has internet access. I really don't think the sites like BB.com are promoted correctly and people don't really now about these sites. I know I've mentioned BB.com on several occasions while giving classes and I was very surprised at the number of people that didn't know about this site or some of the other ones concerning fitness. Anyway, good luck on your competition I know how hard you will have to work...............

    Kay,

Which defined fitness do you work at?

I train at both defined and gold's gym, and i think defined is better because of the variety of equipment but it is too sociable. i can't stand all the wannabees getting in my way all the time.

gold's gym has terrible equipment but the people are more serious and don't get in the way all the time.

i don't think how poor the state is has anything to do with the bodybuilding scene. I think it has more to do with the culture. most of the people here are from mexican decent and you don't have to look like ronnie coleman to play soccer!!

I work mostly at San Mateo, and sometimes at Juan Tabo. Which ones do you work out at?

How is the gym on the base? Is it better than the commercial gyms here?

Right now I'm working out at San Mateo. Sometimes I workout at Juan Tabo, but haven't been there in about a year. Also, I go to gold's gym when i want to get away from the crowds.

The base gym is a lot better. Everything there is brand new (weights, machines, and cardio equipment).

Hey, I'm new to the forums. I am moving to Albuquerque in January and was looking for some motivational buddies. I'm a pretty lean, but want the 0 bf look with some tone. Anyway, fire off a private message sometime and I'd be happy to do lunch.

I like the Defined gyms and train primarily at the one in Rio Rancho and sometimes on San Mateo when my training partner is too lazy to drive from UNM up to Rio Rancho.

Most times though I just lift at home and train for my next strongman comp.
