What are the main symptoms of overtraining?
Is it just being tired and sore or are there more accute symptoms?

tired, dont feel like lifting, wanting to go home when doing youre fravourite excercise, wanting to workout quicker and skipping sets to go home, cant perform youre best.
soreness is not a symptom of overtraining.

really really sore, when you have no energy at all. it usually brings your motivation down.
if youre sore for the same muscle for more than 5 days, youre probably over training.

I'm always sore and that's the way most people are especially if their splits are working...
the Tell-tale signs are irritability, tough time sleeping, lowered libido, and no motivation to work out.

most of the time, you just feel so weak in the areas that you worked out, mainly the arms and the pecs.
It aches and pains when you move it, and when you stretch that certain muscle.
If things are really bad, you'll feel dizzy after standing up and stuff...blackouts, not the best things when youre goin down stairs. lmao

soreness isnt a indicator of overtraining, ive gotten my quads sore for 4days from very light front squats to get my form good with only like 5sets, soreness is DOMS, and scientist havent found out the cause of DOMS yet, this is what i found after a lil research:
Quote:
|
Research indicates that DOMS is more likely caused by localised damage to the muscle fibres membranes, the connective tissue and the contractile elements - namely microtrauma to the muscle fibres. Over the 24 hours post intense exercise, the damaged muscles become sore and inflammed. Chemical irritants are released from damaged tissue, triggering pain receptors. In addition to the injured muscle fibres, there is an increase in blood flow causing a swelling of the muscle tissues which again may stimulate pain receptors. In the morning following the exercise, the muscle fibres are fatigued, have micorscopic tears and are inflammed. The muscle nerve supply perceives this as an abnormal state and sends pain messages to the pain.

Thanks everyone, good posts will be repped (not that it'll do anything).
Still hasn't helped me much. The dizziness symptom has made me think I am overtraining. I've recently moved to a 5-day split (1 body-part per day) and all my sets are to failure. I'm eating massive amounts of food (almost every hour) and sleeping a lot, so I thought this would combat over training, but I guess not.
It's the school holidays, so that's why I've been going so hard, so I think I'm going to keep it up for the next week untill I go back to school, then take a week off, and then go back into it easy.

ive got my eye twitching like crazy, but not from overtraining, from something called "tick", its really annoying, both my eyes twitch very often, and can last as little as a few months to as long as a couple of years.

If it hurts a bit its normal , but when u start to get sick , dont feel good , and hurt like hell , can hardly move the muscle , then you might be overtraining

As mentioned above, soreness does not indicate overtraining. When I lift, I do everything heavy. The next day (days for legs) those muscle groups are still feeling it. That's an indication of a good workout.

Are you turning pale? Is it hard to walk?
Do you get dizzy spells? Do your joints ache?
Do you sleep for 10 hour and can barely get up? Do you find it hard to eat?
Do you pass out under a heav load?
Do you get sick more?
Do yo have a constant head ache?
Do you get the shakes?
Does food lose its taste?
DO you find yourself unable to read/
Thats what was happening to me a few month ago when i tied to be a powerlifter and national rower... training 25 hours a week doesnt work.

Wtf those where the initial or mid term overtraining symptoms i had this time. After squatting twice a week and doing plyos and playing 3 hour bball everyday and riding my bike back and forth one day i woke up end of feb that was, and till now (end of july!! **** its been 5 months in bed) i cant really say i recovered to more than 30%.
I reached to a point from overtraining that i couldnt watch tv, turn on my computer and look straight at it made me sick, daylight and artificial light made me nauseous and sick, car noises made me shake, i would eat and eat and eat and still feel hungry, the world outside looked like a different place to me, trees and mountains i saw every day looked suddenly like new structures, i felt totally spaced out, i slept 10 hours a day uselessly i would wake up and my legs were heavier and weaker and my back would feel like someone was grasping me and trying to brake me apart. I would lie in bed 23 hours a day and feel like completely wasted, walking around was making me sick, headaches nausea and dizziness were killing me, people talking to me and i couldnt stack up what the fck they were saying to me, the info was too much and listening to them i wanted to shout out like a madman. My breathing rates were fckd up, i would breath reaaaaalllyyyyy deeeeep for hours like i was being held underwater. My nervous system was messed up, my endocrine system was and still is messed up, my heart would do anything abnormal but nothing normal, my mood was messed up, i felt hate and hate day after day, i had a terrible retrosternal burning every day i tried to walk for more than 20 meters and some dozens of other symptoms i really dont want to remember now.
I think overtraining is the worst that has happened to me till now( i hope i get over it soon some time, even if thats what i ve been telling my self every day), i had 4 surgeries in my life and was hospitalized many years ago for pneumonia for like 2 months, but never in my life have i suffered so extensively and without mercy.
And all of that is just due to my stupidity, i didnt listen to my body, wanted to get stronger and faster every single day, dont miss a single practice . Two or three days of rest would have saved me but i was so damn ignorant despite the fact that last yr i suffered from overtraining as well but that was only for 6 weeks back then. FAK
