Until I got a dip belt, I just used my old sturdy leather lifting belt, a chain and some clips. Worked great.

Before I got my dip belt I held a DB between my thighs close to my package. Was able to get up to 100 pounds that way and is IMO much more effective that holding it between your feet. But I think you should just buy a dip belt. Not too expensive and you'll be less likely to have something crazy happen than if you were to make it on your own.
