Newb Nutrition Questions
I am 5 foot 10 and 170lbs and I am currently doing the rippetoe program to bulk up. I have a few questions regarding nutrition:
1) I just bought a 5 lb tub of weight gainer, is this ok to use this or should I just use straight whey protein? Should I go for just basic whey protein or do I need the more expensive stuff?
2) Do I need to use any creatine, NO-Xplode, vitamin pills etc? Given that I am just starting I thought I would hold of on this stuff until I start to plateau.
3) I read about you all eating egg whites, do you buy this premade or do you have to separate the egg whites from the yolk yourselves?
4) Is it ok to cheat and if so how often.
5) For work, I have to go out to lunch and we often go to pretty unhealthy places. Is it ok to eat things like chipotle, chic-fil-a etc or do I need to start bringing my lunch?
6) What is a good source of casein protein, I would like to eat this before bed as I read it is good?
7) I hate the taste of cottage cheese, is it ok to replace this with ricotta cheese?

I'll try to answer a few of them:
Cant help with the first two really, I don't use any of it.
#3-You can do either, a lot of people just separate them from the yolk but whole eggs are fine especially if your bulking
#4-Depends on your workout regimen, no one can say for sure but most can cheat once a week and be completely fine
#5-It be better to bring one if you dont want to pack on the fat during the bulk

I'll add a few...
1) I personally like mixing whey, ground oats, pb, low-fat milk while bulking.
2) You don't need any of that starting out. NO supplements are expensive, maybe add some unflavored creatine mono.
6) A good pre-bed snack for me is cottage cheese mixed with peanut butter.
7) Plain cottage cheese isn't the greatest. Try mixing it with fruit or with a couple tablespoons of peanut butter. It tastes like a dessert

I'll try to help you out a little.
1) You already bought it then use it. I prefer a good whey protein with milk and a bananna. This can work the same way for you.
2)Creatine can be benificial but does cause bloat in some. I use Nitro tech post work out only.
3)Since you are bulking up. I would say whole eggs are best for you with some good fats for you.
4)Since you are bulking a would say a cheat meal might help. I would try and keep it as clean as possible.
5)You can eat pretty healthy at most places. Just think about whats in whatever you order.
6)Cottage Cheese would be the best meal. I usually do a casien protein drink with water 1 hour before bed.
7)I'm not sure about this one sorry. Would have to look at the nutrional facts on that one.

You need whey protein. Use the weight gainer if you can't get enough calories, but do your best to get calories through whole foods.

you're right, hold off until you reach a plateau. bringing something like creatine into your diet will help mentally and physically push you over the plateau. im personally not a fan of NO Xplode...

You can do it both ways, though separating it yourself is cheaper. That being said, EAT THE YOLKS!!! the egg whites are an incomplete protein.

cheating is fine. try to do it as little as possible, but a cheat once a week won't hurt your gains. try to keep the cheats reasonable!

unless you go to these places on a cheat day, its not fine. you need to eat properly on a regular basis to see good gains.

basic whey is fine.. stick away from the weight gainer.. and start eating more whole foods.. weight gainers are usually stacked with sugar.. check ur label

no u can do it.. working out takes time and dedication.. taking that stuff has some negative side effects in the future

you can do either.. there are liquid eggwhites u can buy that i use everyday to make a killer omlette or u can seperate from eggs.. ur choice

I wold bring ur lunch to stick away from all the fats especially in those deep fried foods.. unless u want to use one of those lunches as ur cheat meal.. but please try to avoid deep fried food such as chic-fil-a.. that is disgusting do urself a favor and bring a can of chicken, some brown rice, and a salad or something.. those places are disgusting and u can save urself some money buying stuff @ the grocery store

Caesin Protein Shake, Milk, Cottage Cheese.. make sure u mix with a healthy faty source to slow digestion

No - totally different substance.. mix ur CC up with something PB, have some almonds on the side with milk.. or mix in some olive oil-fish-flax-sunflower with some kind of caesin listed above
