I was fourteen. And unlike a lot of people, I was lucky and had a good coach to start with, unlike the prototypical high school athlete who winds up listening to his football coach that really knows next to nothing about lifting.

Note: I am not knocking all coaches here, however, after witnessing a couple of high-school meets in Florida featuring the bench and C&J, where I would not have passed 95% of the benches and 99.9% of the C&J, I am grateful that I was never 'trained' by any of the 'coaches' there. Scary, really.
