Here's a great shoulders workout!
Take your mountain bike (a road bike is too light to be effective), hoist it up over your head to get it into the bed of your truck. Then take the bike out of the bed of your truck when you reach the ride location.
After the ride, repeat the process of hoisting the bike overhead and putting in the bed of your truck. When you get home, take the bike out of the bed of your truck. You will get a fantastic shoulders workout, especially if you are 5'5".
Seriously, I am risking scratching the truck (Chevy Silverado 1500) and banging the bike by doing this. I'm thinking about getting a trailer hitch-mounted bike rack. Those are the kinds used for SUVs with a trailer hitch, but I wonder how stupid it would be to have one on a pickup truck."Go home, have a beer and smash something. That's what I would do" - Unknown (but probably Thor).

I'm too short to reach across the tailgate. I would be leaning too forward with the weight of the bike out in front.
jump into the bed of the truck and squat down, and pick up the bike?
Sometimes it suck being short. OK, it ALWAYS sucks being short."Go home, have a beer and smash something. That's what I would do" - Unknown (but probably Thor).

What I thought he meant was to open the tailgate down, stand in front of the opened tailgate (on the ground) and put the bike in the bed behind the tailgate. Then close the tailgate. That's where I would be leaning forward at the waist with the weight of the bike out in front of me to put the bike in.
I checked out Thule bike racks. There is a 2 bike rack for hitches that is $139.00 That's not too bad. I have the spare tire version for my old Jeep Wrangler. That thing was great. I don't know if it can be adapted for the hitch.
I know... I'm overthinking this."Go home, have a beer and smash something. That's what I would do" - Unknown (but probably Thor).

does he want a bike to use for triathlons, or actually a TRI-bike? They are drastically different, just fwiw.
