I ride a Jamis Komodo and a custom Trek sprinting bike. I happened into the sprint bike because it's previous owner made the 3 time loser in his drug testing, lol. I ride the velodrome locally as well as the NCR and B&A trail every weekend. Speed man, it's all about teh speed!!
You mentioned velodrome and sprinting bike. The Trek is not a fixed gear track bike by any chance is it?
I missed out on the first few pages of this thread, but I'm glad it seems to be a popular topic! I work at a local bike shop and my entire life usually involves bikes. I'm a pretty cheap bastards, so right now I ride a 98 trek st120 (the only steel framed Y bike by trek), a trek 930 (awesome steel hardtail), an a specialized rockhopper (aluminum commuter/930 replacement). I'm working on 79 or 89 peugeot record du monde frame for a fixie conversion, but it going to take forever to fix, so I'm also working on a Japanese Zebra-Kenko "Thunder" fixed gear conversion as well. Since I get a nice price on parts I'm going to get some phil wood hubs and velocity rims, so it should be a sick fixie. I gotta run for now, but you'll see me in this thread frequently!
Bah I have a freakin walmart roadmaster lol, I ride in town a few times a week, not nearly as experienced as you guys. but I came across this thread and had to get out and went and rode for about an hour. just wanted to say thanks for getting me off my lazy you know what.

Heh... I am sooo jealous of you guys who are doing in excess of 20-30 miles per ride. I think it's going to take longer this time around to get up to the kind of mileage I was doing 8-10 years ago.
I did 8.4 miles tonight at the beachfront, all pavement. At the end of the ride, I got a burst of speed of 20 mph for the last 1/2 mile. That is the fastest I've ever gone on a mtb on a flat run. I hunkered down on the bars, pulled back on them and peddled like the devil himself was after me.

Heh heh... that happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I got to the 8 mile point of what turned out to be a 15 mile ride. I was having such a good time riding, but then I thought "oh crap, now I have to ride back!" To date that has been the furthest I've ridden. I made it with energy to spare.

Just don't do like I did twice this week, get caught out in the rain 15 miles from home! Damned goofy weather, pouring down rain like piss out of a boot one minute, sunny and so humid you damned well hope you'll die or pass out the next, lol! GLOBAL WARMING FTL!!
Yes, my Trek is set up as a fixed single speed bike. It'll make a life taker and heartbreaker out of you, lol!! Hills blow buffalo on that damned thing. I do have the cassettes to change it to a 21 speed, but right now, I'm enjoying the sprinting inside in teh AC.

You described Wednesday night.
I was all set to put the bike in the truck and drive down to the beach to ride. As I walked out the door at work I felt sprinkles, and the lightning started. The storm clouds were behind me all the way home, west to east.
I got home, the sky split with lightning and thunder, and the rain poured down. It was so bad a robin took refuge under a bush until the rain stopped; then he flew off. But the sky still looked dark and threatening all evening, so I scrubbed the riding mission.
One evening years ago I went out to run. I saw the dark clouds but thought I'd be done running (3-4 miles) way before the storm hit, if it even did. I got not even a mile into the run and realized I made a hyooge mistake. By now the black clouds were directly overhead, and I was passing under some high tension electrical wires.
I still thought I could outrun it, but just past a mile the gods decided to teach this arrogant little human a lesson... it got black as night and the sky split open. I took refuge on someone's front porch for at least an hour, chatting with the owner the whole time. After that, every time I passed, we'd wave to each other.
By the time I was able to get home, it really was dark, and I kept landing in water ankle deep. This was before I had a cellphone, so my partner was frantic wondering what happened to me. Boy, did I get chewed out!

How do you guys manage to hang in there for those 20-30 mile rides.....not in terms of endurance so much, but man, dont those little bike seats bother you after all that time? Im on my bike for an hour riding nice and easy and it feels like Ive been kicked in the prostate. Looked at some extra padded seats but the padding is all for the ass, your junk and prostate are still getting worked.

When I was doing longer rides, I'd stand up on the pedals or stop for a walk, or most importantly: shift and squirm in the seat. Don't glue yourself to one spot. You have to move around.
your junk and prostate are still getting worked.
And this is bad... ?

I used to get that with the occasional long ride. But when I did long rides all the time everything seemed to get used to it!

A good bike seat can be an absolute must for every cyclist whether recreation or hardcore. Without it, your riding experience will not be a lasting one. Unfortunately, there's no exact way to decide which one is best until you try it (and that can be expensive). In that case, the "if it doesn't fit...don't force it" philosophy can be extremely important.
As you mentioned, some seats (and riding position) if not done right, can be a pain in the rear...literally! After my first such experience, the first thing I did was to invest in a good pair of padded riding shorts. I say good because these shorts take a lot of stress, and if they're not quality, you won't get much in the "wear and tear" department. However, if you are extra sensitive, I'd suggest you get the gel padded variety.
You should know there's a good reason these shorts are so popular with cyclists: they work! Although there are some guys out there who are not very open to their fashion appeal? In that case, you can always simply wear them under your regular shorts. In addition, and even more important than bike shorts, is a good bike seat--although that take a little more experience to determine which one is best for you. To that end, there's your friendly neighborhood bike shop. They may let you sample a few seat types before you buy. But frankly, you need "time in the saddle" before you can really determine which seat type is right for you. For me, I've got the padded type with the center cut. But be careful you don't get too soft a seat. Like shocks, they can absorb your pedal force and hamper performance.
By the way, I've got 2 bike seats (one too soft...one too hard) in my closet. That's just the price you pay to get it right. Good riding!!

I also read somewhere, once, that bike shorts are meant to be worn commando. The reason is that regular skivvies can cause chafing. Now, I love my bike shorts, but I'm not keen on going commando. So I bought a pair of Dry-Fit skivvies. I stayed dry as the Sahara, and they had a silky feel. I love 'em. Gotta get more.

Funny you should mention the Peugeot. My fixie is a Peugeot Tourmalet from the eighties. The bike was given to me and luckily it already had 700c wheels on it so I just put a cheap Suzue flip flop hub in the rear. I've got around 100 bucks total in the hub, wheel build, fixed cog and freewheel cog.

Dude, that is pretty damn sweet fixie (especially for free!). Paint looks really nice... but dude, you gotta get rid of that rear brake/braze-ons! (lol jk, i can respect your decision to go safe rather than sorry). Do you know if the bottom bracket/headset is french or english threaded?
Hey guys, I also wanted to let everyone know that I am in the process of starting my own fixed gear shop. Right now i'm working out of my garage along with an excellent 20 year veteran bike mechanic, but I'm hoping we'll get rolling with our own business soon. If any of you guys are interested in buying a fxie off of me, I'll totally set you up. Whether you want a junker or a primo show-stopper, I can do it.
At this point I'd prefer to make high performance fixies, because I don't have a very large supply of cheap old parts, but we might be able to work something out if you're on a budget. Just let me know what you want and how much money you have and I can quote you a price for a fixie, delivered and everything.
Seriously, I can strip down and setup a huffy fixed gear bike, or I can get you a sick ass Colnago frame with Phil Wood hubs, velocity rims, chris king headset, brooks saddle, anything you want. Just lemme know. Thanks guys!
Way back before most of you were born I had Procured two of the old Schwinn grand le tours. I just thought they were skinny bicycles then I saw one of the first Ironman triathlons on TV which made me want to ride long distances.
I kept playing with them and learning about gears and gear ratios from a book that I got from the library. Yes, in those days we got information from a library.
One Sunday morning I got up and decided that I would ride down to my parents house. It was about 25 miles away and I made it in about two hours.
There was no one there to wave their hands as I rode down main street to my parents house but I was hooked. Still am

I know exactly what you mean ebout the life taker thing. The first time I rode my fixie, I went to stand and bout got bucked over the handlebars. We have nothing but hills here in Ky but it's not the climbing so much that gets me it's the 200 rpm cadence comming down the other side. There is a rail trail in Ohio that is pancake flat I'm going to try hit on it sometime this year.
R33T- I don't know about the BB threads but I guess I should go through it. It looks like it just takes a spanner to pull it out. I don't know if all from that era are like that. It is a nice bike. I kinda hated to take it apart. I know that I'm breaking the fixie code by having a rear brake but if I flip it around to the freewheel side, I'll be glad I have it.

I only ride in the spring, summer and fall. I just love riding at night the best. I also ride in the day.
