It's a good place to start from, but I wouldn't classify it as being that good. Better than the average person, and a bit slower than the average person who runs.

its okay... in 8th grade I ran I believe it was about 2.4 or 2.6 miles in 19 minutes and 46 seconds. I probably ran my hardest on that one hence I gave it my all and was literally yelling like you do when lifting weights I was exhausted. Good job though man.

The only way to get better at it is to kep on running. Have a timer/watch with you and for everytime you go out there try to beat your original time.
We usually do sprinting drills where we will do a slow run/trott for 1/2 mile then all out sprint for 1/4 mile. And do this alternating for about 4 miles. Sometimes we'll run in boots through an all-terain course in the woods with obstacles laid out. Things like that can make your run time quicker.

But I'm sorry to say though.. the only true way to get better at running is to run.

My best time right now is 3 miles in 20.15 and compared to some of the other Marines I know... I am far from "fast". I'm a little faster then average to be totally honest. I got a buddy that can run 3 miles in like 17.30+/-

There's a 40 year old 1st Sgt a few years back that can run 3 miles in little under 15.5...

Just to give you a general idea of where you stand out there.

But yes as alot of people stated. Your probably faster then the majority of america..

The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and hear all kinds of talk, get told that you're a god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go. But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds. ~Henry Rollins

i'll be honest 2 miles in 19 minutes isn't all that great but like people said its a start. if you've never really run before you'll start to learn your stride and your time will drop a decent amount in the beginning but then slow down... like all things :P. anyway keep in mind that 2 miles in 10 minutes is a year to 2 year goal because it is extremely difficult and takes a very dedicated runner to hit that. as for advice... some people like interval training for distance running... in other words run 1/4 mile (or 1/2 or whatever) at a pace faster than what you can hold for the entire distance and then slow down for a distance... speed up... slow down... until you've run the distance. i personally don't like that... i like building up speed throughout the distance. so for you possibly running the first 1/2 mile at 11-12 min pace, 2nd 1/2 mile at 10-11, 3rd at 9-10, and forth as fast as you know you can complete the distance (faster than the 3rd leg tho). anyway it just takes time no matter what you do.

With a good 8 week program, you can prolly cut down to 2 miles in 12 minutes. Good distance running is about breathing and mindset. You get those 2 straight and the speed and endurance will come. I used to be a horrible runner, I can knock out 3 miles in around 17-18 minutes now everytime with almost no training.

don't get his hopes up. dropping from 19 to 12 in 2 months is alot to ask. unless he just gave up smoking 2 packs a day lol.

that comes down to genetics. most people will never see 2 miles in 10 minutes in their lifetime, whether they have a good training program or not.

Hate to break it to you but by army standards you wouldn't pass basics pt test, let alone AIT. 2 mile for your age groups minimum for basic is 16:?? something. I run 14:17 and I'm just halfway decent. Pass AIT standards though. Lots of faster guys though.

I would say if you get it down to 2 miles in 12 min it is very respectable. I know for soccer it was a requirement to run 2 miles in under 12 min. Just time yourself everytime you run and try to get it a little quicker each time.

my best 2-mile was just around 12 minutes back frosh year in x-country - just before stress fractures in both tibia retired me from my running career

honestly, you just gotta keep running. I'd suggest increasing distance over the next few weeks, and try some sprint work occasionally [ideally, you'd pick a day each week to run a shorter distance for time, followed by some sprints/hills].

when I started running cross country all those years ago, we ran 400's the first day of practice, worked up to a mile by the end of the first week, then up to about 4 miles a few weeks later when school started, and we were doing 10 a day easily by the time the season actually started. after 10 a day, 2 was nothing, lol.

yup my coach called it coopers test...during preseason where we had 2 a days, at 630...we ran two miles before our practice....and if everyone didnt make it...we ran 2 more... everyone could do it by the end of preaseason but man...at the begining we ran 4 miles a lot of mornings....needless to say i was a junior on varsity...and 19 minutes would have been ridiculously slow....if i recall the out of shape guys (me at the begining) would finish in 14-16 minutes.

no 2 in 12 is not elite...but i say its very good.... i know i cant do it anymore...

better than most people cause most people won't be able to finish 2 miles. It's an okay start. Just keep running.
