I've heard many say that it's necessary to change your weight lifting routine or your progress will peak. How often should you change some things in your routine? 6 weeks? 12 weeks? Also, how would you change it up? Example: If your doing BB flat bench chest for a while would it make a difference to switch over to DB instead of BB?

I know two guys who train at my gym who have been on the same routine for nearly three years. They are bigger than about 95% of the people who post here and continue to grow each time I see them. The point is if it isn't broken don't fix it. There is no law that says you have to or even should change your routine after a certain time. Change it when it stops working.

chnage routine every 8 weeks - have a week off every 8 weeks. So you're going back to the gym with a new routine.
chnage the order of the excericses on a weekly basis.
after about 4 weeks exchnage BB for DBs and vice versa.
thats what i do
your muslces wont adapt providing you're going up in weight or reps regularly. Alos changing the order you do the excercises every week will prevent muslces from adapting.

i make subtle changes (swap an exercise or two) every 4 weeks and every 8 weeks i assess my progress and may change up my program entirely to experiment or stave off boredom. Too many people just go in and do something different every time to 'keep the body guessing' but the real key is to keep a routine that you can progress with and eventually switch it up when things get stale.
