Do it! I don't go to a gym like your husband's but there aren't many women who are in the gym at the same time as I am, other than the owner. You might scope it out and see what times it's less crowded and go then until you do get more comfortable, or have your husband go with you.
Good Luck!

i dont want the men there to think i want to be there just to be looked at , or be seen as an attention seeker. i just wanna get seriously cut and train hard , i just feel a bit funny , the reason i was going to change from my high profile chain gym to this one is so i can get seriouse without the usuall chit chat i get at mine and also no queing for rack or smith what you all think .
thanks so much in advance on this .
Just do it. When the guys see that you're there to get the work done, they'll either offer to spot you or just leave you alone. Unfortunately, you'll probably still get some chit chat, but nowhere near as much.
Oh, and there will be some turdwad who tries to act all big and cool and make some lame ass comment, but just ignore it if that happens.

from a mans point of view....if its any kind of serious gym at all I would think youd be welcome there and the guys would go out of their way to help you. I dont think anyone would harass you at all.
almost all 'powerlifting' type gyms have a few female powerlifters and they are well looked after

I just joined an ?secondary? gym that is mainly ?Man oriented?. It is hard core and some females do belong, but it is highly dominated by Men. I did this so I could just put my iPod on and train and keep to myself. I am very content there and could give a crap what the other men are doing or if they are even looking my way. I just don?t make eye contact. I am there for ME and to sculpt my body at this stage of the game, I had to go where I could accomplish this most. My ?home? gym simply will not cut it and I know too many people there and they know I am competiting. I do not have time for idle chit chat anymore and just want to go in there, get the job done on some awesome equipment. I find it very refreshing to be there. And half the men in there are focused on their own competition goals that we all just blend together. I call it ?Art in Motion? (okay, I?m weird). The only difference is, is that I smell better than them. LOL!
Best wishes to you ? go for it! The best gyms are the ?muscle head? non-commercial places that are hidden in the dark allies.

I used to go to a very bare bones gym. It was fine, although the early mornings were better. People who train at 6am before going to work aren't there to ***k around.

The gym I go to is very much male dominated. I think in the time that I've been going there, I've seen two women there, and each time they were just sort of hanging around moving light weights while the guy they were with worked out.
I was nervous initially when I joined. I am very serious about my training and do not like any attention at all. I just go, put on my music and focus. I've pretty much been left alone. The only time I've been approached for anything other than training related stuff they waited until I was leaving which is respectable.
You'll get used to being there and the guys will get used to you. If you are focused on your training, it will show and you'll be left alone.

I used to, but I stopped. I was very uncomfortable with the attention (seems always to be from the least attractive ones) and all the "helpful" hint (often incorrect)" neither of which were wanted.
Now I use the gym at school.

Great to hear. I have my own hardcore setup at home now but I have trained and worked in some pretty hardcore male dominated gyms and they have been VERY productive environments

i'm with you on that. The chain gym i'm a member of now has several trainers/employees that always want to chat it up with me when i come in, and no offense to them but i'm just tired of those motor mouths. I know they're just curious or trying to be helpful but i'm in there to do my thing and get out. in out done. no lingering in between. I think i'm going to seek out a more hardcore gym, maybe i'll flourish being around other people who are in the competition training mindset.

My gym is a bodybuilders gym although there are women that go there too.
At my old gym I used to train exclusively in the weights/boxing room as it was all guys and they were working out rather than sitting around chatting
I find as long as you are there to seriously work out the guys tend to respect it, I have befriended some of the biggest meanest looking guys in there and they are also the biggest sweethearts!

it can take a few weeks for the guys to recognise that you know what you're doing, but now I spot for a lot of the guys when they don't have anyone else and I love walking into my gym and getting big grins and waves from them all.
Makes my workout much more fun

It is all about The Wah!
I have to agree with everyone above... my gym is male focused, and I am usually the only chick on the weights floor. At first I was a little scared of the bigger guys, but they are very nice really, and because they see me focusing and not just mucking around they have really accepted me into their groups.
Good luck... you will be fine!

The gym I go to is definitely male oriented...kinda has a sweaty garage feel/hardcore type vibe you'd say. I'm normally the only girl lifting alongside them..there' s ladies' workout room and its a room not area..very small! Alot of people not just women are intemidated to workout there but I couldn't think of any other place I feel more at home I'm not into the health club, chill at the juice bar and put out the vibe enviornment

My gym is male oriented too. The freeweight-area, that is. BEcause the cardioqueens cannot believe what I am doing there, and especially not with the weights I use. (Nothing much, but they think I should be looking like hulk hogan or something).
In the beginning, when I used to train with my trainingpartners in the evening, none of the guys bothered to ask ME why we did a certain exercise, or bothered to tell me directly that I did a pretty decent squat. Okay, I admit, the blokes I trained with were a bit more intimidating than I am, but they always replied to exercise related questions with: "Dunno, ask Euqinom". You should have seen the look on the faces of the other men. Now, a couple of months later, they know my first name, ask me to spot them, and ask me stuff, and sometimes even start talking to me. Woohoo. ;-)

I don't blame you for askin I love my gym so damn much I could never go back to a 'normal' gym again.
Last night I was spotting a 110kg guy doing chinups, then he helped me do mine (he could lift me with one hand)
Its serious fun

Mine used to be hard core and still has a lot of those types. I prefer that. I could not bear going into a "women's only section". There are definitely women there, including a few hardcore powerlifters.

If you go to the hardcore gym and do work then you'll be fine. Men respect women that bust their ass off.
