    How does Muscle Memory work?

I was asking about my unexpected strength gains, despite my tight low calorie diet in another topic (http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=341697)

How long does Muscle memory last? I was huge when I was 18 (I had 17" solid arms and was at 195lbs 6'), Now, 6 years later, is the muscle memory still in play?

So, just because I WAS muscular in the past, does that mean it will be that much easier for me to grow back to that condition? Even after so many years of neglecting myself??

Yeah, muscle memory lasts until you die, however as you age, your ability to grow new muscle diminishes (but is not ever gone...just harder to do).

No one knows exactly why muscle memory works, but there are two key things that are theorized that go into causing muscle memory:

    1. - Leftover Tissue. There is tissue left over from the muscle that your body had reabsorbed that's still there, just smaller. So your body doesn't have to reconstruct the entire fiber.

    2. - CNS Training. Your Central Nervous System (CNS) knows the "pathway" to make muscles where you had them before. It doesn’t have to learn how to do it again.

As far as time...it all depends on how hardcore you are with routine and diet.

Welcome back on the wagon, bro.

    2) Nutrition - You can't build anything without raw materials.
    3) Routine - Work hard, but smart.
    4) Recovery - Muscles grow in bed, not in the gym.
    5) Supplementation - Icing on the cake.

Excellent, that sounds like some good news man.

I think I should thank myself for being in shape back then Of course, there's still a long journey to go back there, but whatever, there's no fun without a challenge
