When the sternum (breastbone) protrudes, it is called Pectus Carinatum. It doesn't matter if one side sticks out more than the other or what...it is the same thing. When the chest is "caved in", that is Pectus Excavatum.

I think everyones either sticks out or caves in. Its normal. Its likes having an "inney or outtey bellybutton" I have never seen anyone with a completly flat chest.

Exactly, mine goes in a bit, but its nothing that could be considered a "condition" or whatever. Id rather have it stick in than stick out.

btw- lud, i cant touch my shoulder blade with my right, but can with my left, lol, is this common?

This is very interesting because i thought i couldnt reach my shoulder blade due to pe but when i got the nuss surgery done in john hopkins i still cannot reach it either. And what surprises me is that my dad couldnt reach it even he does not have a pe and also my uncle but... my second uncle can. I've already ask this in pectusinfo.com board and it seems that they almost all have the same problem. We still have no clue what is this called i hope some of you might know. I already made a schedule with a chiro in may but if any of you finds out what it is let me know.

    Thanks

I play with a goalie who has pectus excavatum pretty badly. His chest goes in a lot. He also has a lot of symptoms of marphans syndrome. Whether he has that I dont know. I've never asked him about it and he's never mentioned it but I wonder what would happen if a puck hit him there, his is really deep.

I've got pectus excavatum that's fairly deep but symmetrical. I've tried to get lean enough to have at least a hint of a six pack and I've gotten to the point where I even have some veins showing in my quads but to no avail. I can get two or four to kind of show up. Seems like it causes what fat I do have to accumulate only in the stomach and chest. I think it causes me to spin my wheels nutrition wise because I've cut to the point of muscle loss a couple of times in attempts to see abs and it hasn't worked yet. Could've just been building muscle the whole time instead and stayed at a reasonable bodyfat percentage (11-12%). So I guess my question is, does anyone have or know someone with PE and a solid set of abs?

    Pe and abs

Not only do I not know anyone with PE and a solid set of abs, I don't even know anyone with PE besides myself! In all my long life I've just not encountered anyone built like me. Anyway, in my case, with not only the depression in the chest (2 1/2"), my lower chest bones stick out some; and with that arrangement, even though I have very little flab around the middle I have basically a one-pack! The abs, I guess are all sort of together, hard, but not defined. Sorry I can't help you. Don't sweat it, though. Build up your body and harden your muscles and make the most of what you have.

in for PE... I had surgery when I was around 9 (21 years ago?) before Nuss and Ravitch procedures were around... in my case they broke the bone/cartlidge or something and sewed me back up... I have a moderate size depression but since I started lifting a few years ago it definitely looks better now, while I'm sure it is just as deep, I look much better with some muscle.

Has it effected you in any way? maybe in terms of how much you bench or cardio ability?

My friend's dad who is a college football coach told me many years back that PE affects the bench press. He said it causes the pec insertion point at the shoulder to be closer to the center of the body meaning there is less leverage. Don't know how much truth there is to that, but it makes sense.

yeah, it certainly would explain why my bench is pretty low compared to my other lifts.

I have it but I'm not sure how much it effects me. As I can breath well, far better then most people and my bench doesn't seem to suffer much if any from it as all my lifts are pretty much in line.

But they are still low, my current 5 set, 3 rep workouts. From weight is from when I started 8 1/2 months ago.

    Squat: 170lbs (From 75lbs)
    Deadlift: 195lbs (From 75lbs)
    Bench: 125lbs (from 95lbs)
    Military Press: 85lbs (From 60lbs)
Bent Over Barbell Rows: 140lbs (From 75lbs)

So I've gotten much, much stronger but most off my strength was leg based... hopefully now that I'm well balanced in all my lifts everything will increase at a simular ratio to what it is now.

Oh and a link to a picture of myself, it shows what my pectus looks like.

Nah, my bench is... I dunno, around 205x8 now.. probably pretty normal for my height/weight and effort put in I'd guess (I'm 182lbs now, was 170 when I posted those pics 2-3 years ago)... The pecs themselves function absolutely normal, no weird pains or anything. Cardio, I believe my lung capacity may be somewhat limited, but to be honest, I played sports -soccer, baseball, basketball- all my life without any issues, but I was never a fan of running and I don't do any cardio at all now.... if my PE was even just a little more severe, it would probably cause bigger issues with my lungs.

The biggest effects were mentally... I've slowly learned to like my body, 90% due to lifting and making everything else look better, 10% due to just accepting who I am and certain things I cannot change

Indeed it looks like you might have a mild case of it. I'm quite sure it does effect the bench press cause I can do the Bent Over Barbell Row at about 215lbs while my Bench is only 185lbs, both are my current maxes.

Yes it does affect benching (in a bad way). You have less to start with (smaller chest) and can't really build the inner pec as it is typically depressed for people with PE.

Looks like a couple of you on here are getting muscle insertion points and an actual chest depression confused.....
