everyone has abs duh but they got to be strong if you want to lift heavy weights, i believe if your abs arent strong enough to help lift the weight you're back will round, so im guessing thats the use of the belt

ummm... weight belts are designed to help keep your back stabilized under alot of stress (overhead tricep presses, standing military press, squat, etc.) Having strong abs helps your back stay stabilized, but in some cases ab strength isn't enough. I personally don't use a weight belt but some of my friends use one on their heaviest sets of overhead movements and squats, just to protect their lower back. The point is, do what works for you.

There was a post about this the other day and i think we decided that when you don't use a blet it strengthens stabalizing muscles and with a belt that wont happen, i think belts should only be used only when doing extremely heavy lifts.

Flex also says that Ronnie Coleman is natural. Weight belts are not needed unless your doing squats, deads, or cleans with reps below 6.

LMAO BEST DAMNED JOKE EVER!!!!!!! D00D APE YOUR TOO HILARIOUS. Please stop typing in caps ape, it gets annoying after awhile.
Also that mag is wrong, having a six pack is only because of your bodyfat, that means no one would need a weight belt because everyone has abs but there just underneath layers of fat.

I saw a guy maxing out on bench with a cheap ass bar that was only supposed to hold like 300 lbs, well he had like 450 on it and it was old.....and the bar bent like a pencil! It took 5 guys to get it off of him and onto the floor(obviously couldnt put it back on the rack)
It was freaky! I have never seen a metal bar bend like that

Well now, lets see here..
having a six-pack will do absolutely nothing to protect your back. Why? Because a) it does not attach to your back and
b) its role is to cause flexion of the spine, it has no role in spinal stability.
To achieve spinal stability and protection, you need to have well developed transverse abdominus muscles...heard of them?? Know how to train them????
Along with this, good spinal muscles called multifidus...they stabilise the spine very well.
If these muscles are developed, and if you are lifting weights they should be, then weight belts will mostly be unnecessary. In fact, they can be counter prodective because they interfere with the body's weight-sensing mechanism which activates the transverse abdo and the multifidus. So, using a weight belt takes away the action of these stabilising muscles.
Also, the weight-belt locks-up 2 of the 5 lumbar levels, meaning that the load is now shared amongst the three levels which are not locked up.
Get the picture??

The belt is used to supposedly support you back so to be on safe side you may want to use it during your heavy lifting. Also, keeping your abs compressed (or "sucked in") while you motion through the exercise will aid in protecting your back and it also gives your abs a little workout too
