About working out and growing taller

Now we all know that working out itself does not stunt growth.. but why is it that everytime I see a person who started bodybuilding when they were really young, say 13 or 14.. they're always really short?

is it possible to grow muscles AND height at the same time?

When do you think someone like Shaquille Oneal started working out or all those tall football players?
Why wouldn't someone want to take care of their own body?

Arny started working out with weights at 15. He grew to 6'2"...didn't stunt his growth.
It's being a part of the Red, White and Green that makes me a Rooting Machine. And when you feel my mighty Stallion, you will know you have been with a true Italian. :D

    Edit Dec 2009: ^^^^^^^^^^^^ I was gay when I was 15.

Really? I've always been looking for the stats on his parent's height. But I heard that he really isn't 6'2". If Lou is 6'4", then Arnold doesn't look that much shorter. Anyone else heard that Arnold is shorter than 6'2". But yea, back to the original post, in my opinion, anything pre-puberty should be kept above 15 reps a set, and should never be to failure.

it can stunt your growth if youre not careful.

whoever tells you it cant is full of ****.

a kid at my school started lifting when he was fourteen and he was 5 feet 5, he is 20 now and hasnt grown a centimetre. he has been to a growth specialist and has been specifically told that the growth plates in his spine and knees were damaged from overstressing them by lifting when his body couldnt handle it.
his 2 little brothers are 14 and 15 and both over 6 feet tall.
put it this way, if you havent finished growing, you have a risk of stunting your growth from lifting weights. so be ****en careful.

Interesting.... do you know what exercises have the most risk for messing up your growth plates? You said there were growth plates in the spine and kneecaps, so that means squats and deadlifts could **** them up right?

You have got to be kiddin me. You think weights are the only thing that stress your bones??? Running and Track and Soccer and Football Etc... All put more stress on your bones then anything else. It puts even more stress on your bones then weightlifting. He probably got his genes from the moms side of the family and his brothers from his dad. Besides if he was 5 ft 5 at 14. And his other Brother is also 14 but already 6 foot. Doesn,t that prove that his little brothers are way taller at the same age he was. They were ment to be taller.... its totally different genes.

runnin, soccer etc do not put any were near the stress on ur bones as weights do.

although there is no research in to this stunted growth you only have to use common sense, children should not do weights any one who believe otherwise needs to do Biology.

give me the justification to your claims using biology without making presumptions about any 'damage' weights do to growth plates and/or other parts of the body unless you plan to back those up sufficiently

Well, I don't think lifting by itself will stunt your growth. But impropper nutrition coupled with wrong form and training techniques will.

The high protein diets required to adequately rebuild muscle also require a higher amount of calcium. Without enough calcium intake, you body will take what it needs from your bones. Then instead of adding calcium to the end of the bones, it will instead rebuild what it has taken later on.

    Arrow

BULL$HIT...if you work out with great form you shouldn't have any problems....however if you use crappy form u may get microfactures in ur bones which will prevent you from growing etc.

in any case...i started working out at 14...and i actually went thru an insane growth spurt DURING my early bodybuilding days....went from 5'5 to 5'8 in a year and a half...so don't listen to any1 that tells u just cuz u workout u won't grow tall.

    i'm currently 5'11 and still growing(i'm 16 going on 17 btw)

Urm that post had no evidence of that it does not stunt growth in children, all it does which we already know is back up that lifting increases bone density.

Any way this could go on forever i dont wanna get in to an argument so lets agree to disgaree. I hope one day they make a documentry about this. AND I HOPE I AM WRONG coz i wouldnt wanna see kids get hurt.

well considering its well accepted that it does not stunt growth, and you claimed that you knew this due to biology, i thought it made sense for you to back your claims up.

weight bearing exercise actually leads to the buildup of calcium in bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis especially when begun at a young age

Yes, that's only if your calcium intake is sufficient. First, you must take in enough additional calcium to take care of your additional protein intake, then you must take in enough to add to your bones. Basically, a serious bodybuilder on a high protein diet should take in about twice as much calcium as the average person in my opinion.

ive always heard that if the amount of calcium needed for a non lifter is taken by a weight trainer, the person lifting weights will be substantially better off, and i have no real backup to my claims, it was just something i picked up over time

so i was hoping you could offer me some backup on what your saying, if im wrong id like to know for sure lol

I'm not referring to lifters vs nonlifters. I'm talking about people on high protein diets, which is pretty much a necessity if you're a lifter.
"High-protein diets can increase the risk of osteoporosis. Eating lots of animal protein, in particular, can increase calcium loss from the body. The risk is especially great when calcium intake is inadequate. Most Americans do not consume enough calcium. "

The more protein you eat, the more calcium you need.

Weightlifting wont stunt growth if you have proper form....

Someone on a basketball/vert forum that I belong to has been lifting since he was 11 and now is 6"8 at age 18 and has good chance of playing college ball.
