Medical question about "colonoscopy" procedure

My brother needs to get one tommorow because he is pretty sick because of some intestine inflammation they think, and they need to look inside to see what exactly is going on. He has to drink this stuff called "Phospho-soda" that is supposed to clean out his intestines so when they look in it, all the stuff will be cleared out. But he keeps puking up the phospho soda stuff because it is apparantly very disgusting, and he can't even mix it with anything because it is very nasty. Does anyone have any suggestions to get this stuff down without him puking it up, because apparantly he absolutely needs to take this stuff otherwise they can't do a colonoscopy

yea gaterade is what he was using but apparantly the stuff is so disgusting that the gaterade doesn't mask the taste at all

Hmmm... all he needs to do is drink 8 ounches of it at a time. He should be able to hold it down. It will literally go right through him. By his last few 8 ounch glasses, he will be crapping the liquid he is drinking.

there are apparantly 2 methods of "cleaning yourself out", and the one you are talking about is the one where you have to drink a gallon over a day. He heard that one was the worse of the two, so he is using "phospho soda" which is only 1.5 ounces, but he can't even get it down without puking it up. He is saying that he would do anything but drink the phospho soda, but my mom is saying the thing you are talking about is even worse.

Dilute it down so it doesn't taste as bad. It should be managable that way. He's just going to have to suck it up and drink it.

is he puking because of the taste or his stomach? cause if he cant keep it down he should really be using the other stuff, sure his bunghole will be raw as hell, but he'll feel better considering he cant eat for x amount of hours anyways.

It has to be diluted in the amounts according to the directions. Basically he really just has to try and suck it up and drink the stuff. I wouldn't say that if I hadn't done it myself. I agree with him, its absolutely horrible.......it has this slimy salt water taste that lingers in your throat. Some people say mixing it with ginger ale helps.....what seriously worked for me was mixing it with the amount of water indicated in the directions, plugging my nose, not breathing in and just chuggin the stuff down as fast as possible and as soon as its done you drink another 6-8 oz of water I think (or whatever the directions tell you to do).....he can try rubbing his stomach or his throat or even pinching himself.....anything to try and get the focus off wanting to puke it up

If he keeps puking it up and does have clear bowel movements tonight before the procedure there's a good possibility the procedure would be cancelled. Also, if he doesnt have clear bowel movements by tomorrow his procedure wouldnt be as good as if it was clear. If he can't keep the stuff down and clear his bowel he should call his doctor on call (it should be in his pre-exam instructions) and maybe obtain a different bowel prep.....however, from what I hear, they are all nasty. Everyone always says the worst part of a colonoscopy is the prep

if he cant follow the directions on it he needs to contact his gastroenterologist (or whomever is on call) before he starts diluting it down, etc.....you're inducing diarrhea.....diluting it down further than the directions or not following the directions could set him up for electrolyte imbalances, especially considering we're not sure what's causing his colon issues

we already called the doctor and he just said he's gotta suck it up and do it, and the other thing where you have to drink a gallon is even worse then this. I think it's a combination of him being very queezy, having bad stomach pains, and the horrible taste that makes him keep throwing it up

Also, they are pretty sure he has "colitis" because my mom has that, and it is genetic. But they need to make sure so they can put him on some meds to control the flair ups.

I start ATLS tomorrow.....ACLS is sometime this month. I'm really dreading ACLS. It's too much memorization of protocols. ATLS is mostly just common sense. July 1st is going to be one scary day. Best of luck!

you could tell him that, if his colon isnt clean and there is a microtear in his colon from the procedure, he could die.

well the doctor said if he can't clear it himself, he is gonna have to go to the hospital because they can't do the procedure until he is crapping out clear stuff, but he also knows the hospital will be 100000x worse then anything he has to do now, so he is trying to avoid that.

I have crohn's disease and ive done the gallon thing before. twice. no doubt its the worst thing ever, but fortunately ive never had to finish the tub. it only took 1/2-2/3 for me to be clear.

no matter how it goes, itll suck. at least he can feel tough to putting the stuff down, it takes some balls.

You need to drink the Fleet phosphosoda to clean your colon so the camera won't be covered in ****. It turns it all into diarrhea. You can eat nothing else other than tea the whole day too. I suppose an enema might help if you can't get the soda down, but I'd ask the surgeon if that's ok.
