Just to get some ideas of the types of gyms most of us like to use. Just because you're training somewhere now, doesn't mean you have to like it. Post the type gym where you would like to train, whether it's at home, corporate gym, or the types with chalk all over the floor!
a gym with people who train with intensity and know what they're talking about.
for those who know it / those in the uk. i'm a member of david lloyds gym.now while i know the staff n the regulars who r dedicated. i hate all the kids n some people talking hogging machines trying to show off to each other etc.
i went to "pinks gym" today to buy some new gym clothes, i walk thru the back to try them on and BAM old style hardcore gym (from what i've heard) loads of big guys training hard with a massive free weight section, 4000 sq ft gym.the manager was a trainer himself and knew his stuff.
if i lived closer i'd love to go to that gym. :'(
feel that sting big boy? thats pride ****ing with ya.

Don't you love it when people like to read newspapers, cell phones, etc. while using gym equipment.
As long as it has barbells, dumbbells, racks and plenty of plates then it works for me. But It would be cool to train in one of those hardcore'dungeon' like gyms. My gym has people doing sit up's while talking on the phone

Tell them that talking on the cell phone has been proven to store bodyfat, and see if they hang up
I prefer a dungeon. Much better than one of those fitness places with fat women on treadmills trying to get slim. I want to work out in a place where as soon as you step through the door, you know your body will be blasted to your limits. My local is just called "Ted's". It's cold, it's a bit dark and the weights are all made of iron and the machines look like torture equipment, but I love it. It just screams 'intensity' as soon as you walk through the door.
You gotta go through hell to get the body made in heaven.

My home gym is an 12x20 room. I have a power rack, 2 benches, 500+lbs. of weight, 2 bars, and a Glute/Ham Raise Machine. I love all of it. I have trained at home and a corporate pussy gym. Never found a dungeon gym unfortunately.
Seems like the Corporate Gymers are losing out..maybe because there are a lot of similarities in a dungeon and a home gym. I started training a decade ago in a home gym area that was separated away from the building in a "dungeon". Concrete floors, rusty weights, music was ours and we just trained. Maybe that's why I still like it.
Well, then what are some reasons not to like Corporate gyms?
- Music generally blows
- Curlers in the squat/power racks
- People have conversations while sitting on machines
- Curlers on the benches (a little more rare than squat racks, but just as annoying)
- Everyone tries to tell you the "RIGHT" way to do things
- Annoying personal trainers (not all, but there are certainly a lot of these)
- Useless machines EVERYWHERE
- Lack of squat/power racks, benches, pullup/dip stations, Glute/Ham Benches, Reverse Hypers and anything else that actually works
- Employees that complain about chalk and deadlifts

It just goes on...
- Fat, ugly women sweating their ass off in front of you on the recumbent bike
- Personal trainers who are more into fitness than muscle building, yet think they know it all about bbing
- Middle-aged men catching their breath on the machine I'm going to use next

I love my home gym. I have everything I need. My equipment, my music and just my sweat

maidenfan wow i love you home gym. One day i want to have something like that. Right now i have that bench and then some olympic dumbell handles and an olympic curl bar. I finally got a weight tree yesterday because i had to set my weight bench up in my tiny room and i need to keep it organized.
best for me is when no one is around, 11:00 am is best time for that. too late for early wakers, too late for people with 9-5 jobs. the smell of sweat hasnt infested the whole area yet aswell.
In a couple of weeks I'm going up north to see some family. On the way I think I'll be paying a visit to Dorian Yates' gym, The Temple, in Birmingham (England). It's supposed to be like a dungeon, cold, dark, and all the weights and machines are hardcore, no fitness crap. I can't wait!!

I lift in a corporate gym now but am building a gym just like maidenfans now. Did you get all ur gear from elitefts.com maidenfan cuz thats where i was gonna get my stuff. I havent found any powerracks better then theirs.
Yes, I got some of my equipment from them. If your tall (Im 6'3"), order your rack taller (7.5 is standard I think). Good guys, good equipment. My next purchase is a belt squat machine. Sarden Strength makes similar racks, but their site is down, not sure if theyre still in business. Elitefts' new R2 combo rack is a hella deal.
What I'm trying to gather is from peoples ideas, what helps drive them to go to a particular gym...Is it the atmosphere, the people there, or just affordability. Of course, it's always a combination of some things, but is there one particular reason that stands out above others?

The variety of machines available would have to be numero uno.
I just go there to build some muscle and the more machines to hit my body from different angles, the better.

I voted for Corporate ONLY because I have never been to a real hardcore gym and would probably embarass the hell out of myself and I like teh Smoothies.
Add to things that suck.
- 90 year old men talking to you nude
- 90 year old men talking to you scantily clad
- 90 year old women talking to you scantily clad
- WTF happened to all the collars
- people using the smith machine to squat 15pds
- weekdays from 2pm to 8pm are packed
- consistent and nagging "contest" and "offers"
- that ghey guy who's always starring at you
- that ugly chick who's always staring at you
- that fat chick who's always staring at you
- waiting twenty minutes to warm up for ten minutes on a treadmill
- packed parking lot
-etc. etc. etc.

It just goes on...
- There are MP3 players in 2004!
- Just stare at them and they know to run away.
- Who cares about machines with a seat.
- Again stare at them.
- Teach them back if you have time.
- ALL trainers are annoying because they don't know a **** and just keep chatting with their stupid trainees about movies and parties.
-
- You can choose a relatively serious gym
- Sissy employees won't dare talk to a big deadlifter. Let them say whatever behind you and turn a deaf ear to that.
I go to a 'posh' gym. There are some things I like about it - the price, the scenery if you know what I mean, and the variety. I don't like the fact that the dumbells only go up to 85 lbs, there's only 1 squat rack, and most of the people are not real serious lifters.
I'd prefer either a dungeon or home gym. I voted for dungeon because it has the slight advantage of having other people to work out with. I think once my contract with the gym I go to now is up, I may end up going to another gym that is more hardcore. Or if I end up buying a house that has room to set up a home gym I'd like to do that.
Oh, I did just think of a big disadvantage of a home gym though. If you set up a really good one you're going to need a ton of weight, a power rack, and lots of dumbells. I think it would suck if you decided to move because you'd either have to lug all that stuff to your new place or get rid of it all.
Something Brooks Kubik-like: chalk flying everywhere, no mirrors, no ferns, no distracting blaring hip-hop crap - lots of iron and the simple things like a power rack, a bench and your desire to get STRONG!!
