What does it mean to hate "the West" and what does the west represent to a Muslim?

If by the West you mean North American and Europe, a few generalities can be said about this.

This is not about being jealous of MTV or clubbing or 20" rims or drinking or dancing or music or tv shows. The conflict unfolding before our eyes is a "war of civilizations," a conflict between the rule of God and the rule of man on Earth. This is bigger than democracy, we are witnessing the events that will lead to the emergence of the Anti-Christ and the return of Jesus (pbuh) on Earth.

Muslims do not hate the Christian nor Jewish identities of the West. Muslims are forbidden from killing or harming people for their religion especially the People of the Book (shared revelation). In fact, the average Muslim wishes that the West would ACT like the Jewish and Christian Scriptures instruct them to act, but sadly Judaism and Christianity were infiltrated by Capitalism and Secularism Centuries ago. Not having any outlined political or economic structures to begin with, the two religions were quickly consumed by a mass of disbelieving ideologies such as "sovereignty is for the people, not for God" and "separation of Church and state".

The idea that Muslims have negative sentiments towards Western Civilization can be traced no earlier than the beginning of the 20th Century. The Ottoman Empire, the last existing version of the Islamic State, broke into separate nation-states around 1924, weakened internally with nationalism and externally from the eastern Balkan sectors, north west from WWI infighting, and south-west (where nationalist Christian Arabs were migrating and "preaching nationalism").

Arabs were taught to separate from themselves and their Muslim brothers because of European notions of nationality and other un-Islamic forms of congregation and bases of unity. Divided, each state was capped with an instated dictator or tribal king, who ruled by secularism, socialism, communism, monarchy, every type of rule but Islam. Today the fraud is called "ruling by legislative democracy".

By 1948, Israel had been created in the Middle East, a perpetual source of conflict, pegged in the middle of the M.E. with the support of the British and American Zionists. A continous watch tower in the ME to insure that Muslims remained declawed and distracted from political Islam.

Since 1924, the year Muslims stopped ruling by God's laws, Muslims have seen nothing but poverty, conflict, death, and humiliation. Each time they united under some banner other than Islam (such as nationalism, language, socialism) they failed miserably at the hands of every single "western state".

Today, Muslims have made such a strong come back in numbers and ideology that I would compare it to the state of the community much earlier than when it had weakened in 1924. The pit of spiritual weakness would be traced to the 1950s, the height of nationalism, socialism, and western influence in tv and music.

Still politically suppressed, Muslims now recognize the long history of Western cooperation that led to the fall of the Islamic state and the source of every other failed ideological point of unity. They see plainly the West's influence on Muslim youth in the west, and how ideas such as (capitalism, legislative democracy, nationalism, sexuality, pop-culture, materialism) are colonially exported to Muslim countries as an attempt to distract people from Islam, both ideologically and politically. In addition, they recognize the damage that Capitalism and Secularism have done to the People of the Book, to people who believe in God in general, the very Christians and Jews who helped instate these false ideologies had lost control and were now being suppressed from preaching about God by legions of "politically correct" atheists, humanists, and homosexuals.

Today, any Muslim who hates "the west" would hate if for these reasons, because "it" continues to propagate false doctrines and ideologies, distracting and suppressing Muslims from the only purpose of life, to live and rule by Islam.

Muslims plainly see that the Iraq war, and all other wars on Islam are wars of civilizations, an attack on Islam, the last bastion of Godliness, the only religion on the planet with a complete political and economic system. A campaign against "terror" has been created by Capitalists and Secularists and other disbelievers as well as some spiteful Peoples of the Book, to once again rally oblivious Jews and Christians and agnostics against Muslims.

The "war on terror" is designed to make every single person either detest Islam with all his heart or recognize it as Truth and become Muslim. Eventually, each non-Muslim country will find a justification to push into Muslim land. From the West, from Israel, from the North East, and from the seas.

The effect, of course, will be to congregate the Muslims until they are back to back, and left with nothing but knowledge of God's plan, and God's Will.

Before Jesus (pbuh) returns to unite Muslims with other believers, the anti-Christ will appear. And you can bet that the anti-Christ will lead the forces of the world against Islam with all his might. He will fail.

Muslims are becoming more and more violent, justifiably or not, because the Muslim world has been without the Islamic state for some 80 years now, and has been tried by God Almighty since 1924.

I predict that all forms of violence by Muslims, justified or not by Islam, will end only once the Islamic state is re-established.

The reason violence is wide-spread today, is because people have misunderstood the purpose of Jihad in relation to the Prophetic tradition in establishing the Islamic state. Contrary to popular belief, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) never performed offensive Jihad to establish the first Islamic state, only to defend the Islamic state once it had been established or expand it into feuding pagan-ruled land.

Most of the people you are shown on tv celebrating tend to be the poorer and less educated strata of the Middle East. Most of these people don't really see the conflict for what it is.

When "they" all attacked Israel right after its declaration, you mean the surrounding Arab states, who attacked Israel after Jewish renegades began raiding Palestinian towns. Not that I'm defending the Arabs here, who invaded only to regain palestine and subsume it into their own countries!

Arabs don't acknowledge Israel as a country because they feel its origins are illegitimate, that it gained its land in illegal ways. Then again, I don't acknowledge the existence of any country from Morocco to Indonesia, so nation-states mean very little anyway.

Not sure who "they" are who pay Palestinians for suicide-bombing, but being paid to get martyred is something only a nationalist would do, not a Muslim.

Arabs always believe "it was the Jews" because in many cases in history in the M.E. it WAS the zionists. When the liberty was bombed, egypt was blame but it was actually Israeli fire. When foreign embassies were bombed in egypt, egypt was blamed until it caught Israeli spies guilty of the bombings. Much of the bombings done on Libya were because of false communication sent out from Libya about "attacking Israel" from a satelite that was planted in Libya by Israeli agents. It's all these small instances that make Arabs believe that "it's always the Jews".

That's a big question. You should ask about specific crimes i.e. punishment for adultery, theft, apostacy, and so on.

The Qur'an specifically states that a woman must wear two articles of clothing:

1) A Headscarf to cover the hair

2) A billowy cover over their body that conceals their body's shape and outline

The Prophet (pbuh) explains that a woman's face and hands and feet may be exposed.

A beard is a "sunnah" or Prophetic tradition. Shaving it off is considered a transgression. Growing one out is a rewarded deed.

The turban, or more specifically I should say, a cap, is a Prophetic tradition as well during prayer. It is a sign of respect to God. The Prophet (pbuh) wore a white cap and a black turban most of the time, but specifically a white cap during prayer.

Outside of prayer, the headgear is optional.

I've been reading a lot about the religion, my mother turned to Islam over a year ago, and she's a white Irish, and use to be a Christian Catholic. (I'm neither religion, I got my eyes opened to Christianity about 3 years ago and I'm only intrested in Islam as something to learn about, not really to convert, or revert too).

Still I've got some questions that she doesn't really know how to answer, I'm sure you can clear them up.

Dying for the cause of God is the highest form of worship. So that's a true statement. That can mean battle. That can mean dying protecting your family or property. That can mean dying protecting your religion. It can also mean getting oppressed and killed simply because people wanted you dead because you are a Muslim and identified yourself as one and stoof for the Truth.

Jihad means struggle in the path of God, complete devotion and sacrifice.

It's worth reading just so you understand the mentality of a Muslim in Jihad

The Prophet (pbuh) rebuked Usaimah when he discovered that the latter had killed a man who had uttered the shahadah (oath of there is no god/deity/ideology worthy of worship but God) following a battle in which the man's tribe was defeated. When Usamah argued that he thought-at the time-that the man did so as a shelter and in fear, the Prophet (pbuh) said: "Did you look into his heart after he had confessed that there is no God but Allah?" Usamah relates: "He [the Prophet went on repeating this to me till I wished I had not embraced Islam until that day" (so that he would not be held accountable for this serious fault)

Yes, the concensus is that most types of music are prohibited, but not for the reason you stated above. The Prophet (pbuh) explicitly forbade it. In addition, music distracts from the rememberance of God. It is almost impossible to continue to praise God in your head while music is playing in the background.

They think of themselves as Muslims, but they think that the ends justify the means.

I'm not saying they're NOT Muslims, God forbid that anyone should accuse another of that. They may sincerely be misguided, they may have ulterior motives. We don't know. What we do know is that God potentially forgives all sins except associative worship, and we don't know in what state they died, we didn't peer into their hearts.

In reality, both the ends AND means must be lawful in order for a Muslim to act on them. Here's an excerpt of a recent piece I wrote:

Maslaha (public interest) alone is insufficient to make an act lawful, especially when it is in conflict with a divine law, when it is speculative and hypothetical, or when the act in question is avoidable. If maslaha is not guided by an indication in Shari'ah (Qur'an and Prophetic traditions), the result is chaos in rulings where halal (permissible) and haram (impermissible) become only applicable in some places, or to some but not to others. This opens the gates to corruption and violates the timelessness of Shari'ah. In fact, the jurisprudential principle of sadd al-dhara'i "blocking the means [to sin]" prioritizes preventing an evil over securing benefits. In general, means take the ruling of the ends to which they lead. Hence, selling grapes to a winemaker is unlawful even if there is no intention to drink or sell wine. In Heaven, God gives you everything that is permissible for you. That includes food, companions, anything your heart desires or you can imagine as long as it is lawful.

For example, you can't want to kill things in Heaven. These impure thoughts don't occur in as purified a mind as it would have to be to get to Heaven. None shall enter it but the purified.

So I doubt you could "piitb" since this is forbidden on Earth.

What has been the Muslim secret to staying to their original beliefs (as opposed to certain other Panentheist Middle-Eastern religions)? And why did Muslim societies in the past tend to be far more tolerant of other religions (even going so far as not to burn atheists, which was very nice) than almost every other country? It would seem that you can be both tolerant AND true to your beliefs.
