    shoulder pain...

i got my arm pulled out of my socket when i was about 6, and till this day everytime i bench my shoulder makes a popping sound and becomes painful. ive spoke to doctors and they basicly tell me theres nothing to do, just not to lift as heavy. but i cant do that obviously... what do you think i should do... ice and tylonal seem to be my only solution..

    Can you incline bench?
    Dips?
Is it when you use a barbell, can you substitute DBs?

I'd be requesting a referral to a sports medicine specialist. Your doc is more concerned with you being OK day-to-day, not what you can do to grow your chest.

If your shoulder popped out at 6 years old then you really have nothing to worry about. If your shoulder hasn't popped out since the first time, then you have nothing to worry about. All you have to do is keep with some up with some rotator cuff/ and shoulder stability exercises just to be on the safe side.

I've had open shoulder surgery in my right and it is 100% stable. I can't do certain movements, but i'm am not that limited, I can still throw just like before, hang and put pressure from all angles just like before. Only difference is that the sugery limited my range of motion a bit. I got most of it back from PT, but it is in my best interest not to obtain the same range of motion as I had before through too much intensive stretching of the shoulder joints and muscles.

Now my left shoulder is a different story. That **** is straight fukked these days. After surgery on my right, I said fuk it, i'd rather go through two weeks of intense pain from time to time due to shoulder dislocations than going through another 6-8 months of surgery and Physical Therapy. But, my shoulders started popping out for the first time when I was like 15 and playing contact sports and I was already too old to magically heal like a 6 year old so it just worse and worse as I kept on playing sports through the years.

I think 6 years old is too young to do permenant damage to the extent of a dislocation 10-20 years later.

flat bench is acutally where it hurts the most for some reason... and dips are perfectly fine because its normally just my body weight im moving, or a few added pounds. benching over 200 pounds is when i start feeling pressure and when i go down, slightly touch my chest, as soon as i start moving up, it makings a popping noise, not a cracking noise. and i get discomfort. i noticed when i would lift at school, on my way to my car i would always find my backback not hanging on the left shoulder because of the pain.

if it hurts - don't do it. it's really as simple as that unless you're looking forward to messing up your body even more.

Is there a good reason not to see a sports med MD or physical therapist to discuss this? Seems like a rather important question, and you're here asking us.

Until then, hyper's right. Pain = bad = stop doing that. Otherwise, you're playing with fire.

so be it - you don't need to cripple yourself. one of my dad's friends used to do powerlifting, had a 600pd bench, then tore his shoulder or something. it's now 30yrs later and he can't go above 90pds on the bench w/o extreme pain....so guess what....he doesn't. it may not be overly effective for mass, but he's smart enough to know not to play with fire.

I have the same problem with my left shoulder. Its killing me. I can hardly bench or do anything with. I asked about it. People at the gym told me I have to work on my shoulders and get them stronger. And I have to worm them up before I do anything.
