    Carving a Perfect Body for a Collegiate Runner

    Im 19, I run track at a major university, primarily the 800m. For summer training Im not suppose to do a whole lot until late July-early August. I lift consistently, 5 days a week, whole body workouts. I do cardio 6 times a week, usually 3 days running, 3 days elliptical/Biking..

    My stats- 5'10, 153 lbs 9-10% body fat.

    My goal is to gain some solid muscle.. I am going to start bulking in the summer now and weigh more while i do my base training.. Then as Nov or Dec. roll around I am going to start cutting for indoor season.

    I eat 2-3 whey protein shakes a day and have a higher protein diet right now. I just bought some CEE and am going to start taking that ASAP.

    Does anyone think CEE will affect my running? Anyone have any advice on my plan for dieting/ cutting/bulking?

    Also, if I eat more calories than needed, and eat healthy foods, will I still gain muscle even though i do cardio a lot? And will my cardio prevent me from adding fat?

    Be sure that you burn LESS than you eat. If you do cardio alot, you may need to eat a little more to compensate for the calories you burn. Try to have no more than 500 calories in extra and you should add some good muscle mass without too much fat.

    What school do you run at? And what are you doing for training now, as well as what do you doing during the season? I am considering running XC and/or track next year myself at college (I'm about to begin my freshmen year), and any advice/tips/input would be greatly appreciated.

    i run at uw-madison..right now im just building some base.. i dont start racing until december so we need some high mileage.. im running 4 times a week for june and more july and then highest mileage in august then back to school.. we have scattered workouts during the summer based on what the coaches say.. running the 800 isnt easy..

    A word of advice, the whole bulking/cutting concept is of no benefit to an athlete like you. You need to train your body to perform its best. That's it. So, tell me, what IS the perfect physique for a collegiate runner? How long is a piece of string?

    If this is your off-season, you should be concentrating on improving on any weaknesses or muscle imbalances you may have. You should be focusing on increasing your limit strength. You should be training in a way that maintains your physique and stats close to where you want to perform at when the season resumes without having to resort to bulking and cutting.
