What is the difference between lunges and split squats?

From what I READ from the descriptions of these exercises, they seem to be the same.

    So any differences?

I think split squats are where you put one leg on a bench behind you, but I can't be completely sure. That movement would be similar to a lunge, but much harder.

    I think that's a Bulgarian split squat.

with lunges you step forward at each rep.
with split squats your feet are at one and the same position throughout the set. this eliminates the stress in the knee, as far as i've read.
i personally prefer the split squat.

Lunges tend to be dynamic. You can lunge to the front, side, back, etc.

Split squats are done statically (no forward, backward, etc. movement). There is no dynamic movement.
