Question how to know if you are insulin sensitive?

How can I tell if i'm insulin sensitive or resistant? I heard you can tell by if your veins disappear or not and by feeling cold or something, does anyone have any information on this? also if you are insulin sensitive do you need more or less carbs that if you are resistant?

I believe there is a machine that measures how many grams of carbs it takes to release insulin.

Insulin sensitivity means you need less carbs for an insulin to act. Insulin resistance means you need more carbsfor an insulin to release.

Actually, insulin resistance means you need more insulin to bind to receptors than if you have a higher sensitivity.

what does that mean? and is there a way for me to find out if i'm sensitive or not? i.e. - self-test at home

Luke, yeah there are ways to determine your insulin sensitivity.

The first and most simplistic is how well you respond to carbs. If you do well(able to gain lean mass and not fat) on a high carb diet, you are probably fairly sensitive to insulin. The opposite(do well on low carb diets) means you probably aren't so sensitive.

the method of determining it through your body type(ie endos are insensitive) is kinda inaccurate.

The best way is to do some blood testing by yourself. Get a glucose drink from your pharmacy, a glucometer and some glucose strips(also from pharmacy).
After not exercising for 24 hours and fasting for twelve(after you sleep) take a blood sample, and read the blood glucose level with the strips and glucometer. Drink the drink and continue to test it 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes afterwards.

The next option is with your doctor, ask for a faster blood glucose and insulin test.

Travis, make it harder for the binding of the receptors is it just takes more insulin to get through to the muscle cell rights?

They don't know the exact mechanism by which it works, but yes, the receptors on the cell membranes have less of an affinity for insulin.

I've never heard it described the way Jean mentioned above, but I guess that's accurate too.

If it takes more insulin to exert the same nutrient transporting effects on a certain number of cells, then it obviously takes more carbs to release that much more insulin.
