    Whey Protein for Rookies

    Whey Protein for Rookies
    February 05, 2006

Whey protein is a popular supplement used by bodybuilders to add to their already high protein diets. Everyone needs protein and whey is the perfect protein because of its convenience and easy to use drinkability. This article will explain what whey protein is and why it`s the top selling sports nutrition product on the market today. You will also learn the common amino acids found in whey, best times to consume it, and learn how much whey you need in your daily diet.

During the process of converting milk into cheese, whey protein is separated out. Whey is the highest quality and best source of protein available to the public. It plays a role as an antioxidant and helps support a healthy immune system. Studies have shown that whey protein contains the perfect combination of amino acids needed for optimal performance in the body. Consistent supplementation of whey with a good exercise program will yield the results that you are looking for.

The amino acids commonly found in most whey powders can be classified in three different categories:
    1) Essential Amino Acids
    2) Non-essential Amino Acids
    3) Conditionally Essential Amino Acids
The essential ones used in most powders powders are valine, threonine, isoleucine, leucine, and lysine. Non-essential amino acids include aspartic acid, serine, and alanine, while conditionally essential aminos are proline and glutamine. Most whey protein powders also include a decent amount of calcium and potassium, so its no wonder whey protein is the highest selling sports nutrition supplement on the market today.

Most athletes consume around thirty grams of whey protein daily, while some bodybuilders even take amounts higher than two-hundred grams. Large doeses are not recommended because it will overload your liver and you won`t get the same results you would get with a lower dosage. The best time to consume whey protein is directly after a workout with some form of simple carbs such as orange juice. When I supplement with whey, post-workout is the only meal I have it. I just make my meals with whole foods which in my opinion, tastes better.

Assuming you eat six or more meals per day, you can get away with having whey at three different times daily. Just make sure that the rest of your meals come from other protein sources such as egg whites and tuna. A diet when you`re only having whey protein will not only taste bland, but you will feel hungrier throughout the day because of whey`s instant digestability. Not what what you want when trying to lose fat. Until next time, later.

So if I drink too much whey (which I don't) I will overload my liver? I only drink whey to meet up protein needs for the day which usually is 1 or 2 scoops.. If I eat chicken/steak protein rich foods, will I not overload the liver?

    Protein for your body

Here are also some information about protein for your body :

Protein, your muscles are protein; you need to consume protein daily to maintain muscle tone and development. But where does the protein come from? What is the best source of protein? How much protein should you consume daily?

Good questions let me see if I can answer them for you.

Well, for starters, meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Beans and peas are also part of the Vegetable Group. You can also get protein from supplements and protein shakes.

Body builders that need large amounts of protein to build the muscle mass they are going for usually use these types of supplements and also there are supplements and shakes that help the elderly or infirmed maintain their protein levels so they do not emaciate.

So what are in these protein shakes and supplements? Actually it”s from the same sources as any other protein, it”s just more concentrated. Whey protein is a fast-absorbing source of protein to support lean muscle development and maintenance. Great for anytime of the day and very helpful post-workout to give your body the extra protein it needs to build muscle mass.

There’s hydrolyzed whey protein, hydro whey is digested and absorbed faster than standard whey protein! It”s perfect for after a workout and mixes smoothly, you can put in milk to make a shake or add it to a nutritional fruit or veggie smoothie. Another whey product is whey isolate, this is a low fat, low carb, fast-absorbing source of protein.

Not all whey proteins are created equal. There is a huge range in quality between different brands. First you have to look at how the cows are raised and what they eat because if you are going to be ingesting 20+ grams of whey a day you want to make sure you aren't getting something full of hormones, pesticides or GMO from the cows milk.

Second, you need to look at how the whey protein is processed. You don’t want acid processing or high heat processing because it destroys the amino acid profile of the whey and is much harder for your body to assimilate and build muscle with. A lot of companies have to add fillers and sweeteners to make it taste better after all of the processing, but a high quality whey tastes great just by itself – nothing added – just one ingredient, the whey protein.
Here is some good info on how to choose the best whey protein powder.

I'm sorry, but why is this write-up getting praise? It's god awful.

whey is the perfect protein because of its convenience and easy to use drinkability
Define 'perfect'. It's not perfect before bed as it's too quickly absorbed. Drinkability - is that even a word?

Most whey protein powders also include a decent amount of calcium and potassium, so its no wonder whey protein is the highest selling sports nutrition supplement on the market today
Do you buy your whey protein for its calcium and potassium?? If that's your agenda, save money and go eat a banana and a glass of milk.

Most athletes consume around thirty grams of whey protein daily
They consume way, way more than 30g

Large doeses are not recommended because it will overload your liver and you won`t get the same results you would get with a lower dosage
A lot of protein ingested is wasted because the body can only absorb so much, but to suggest that high doses are actually counter-productive to muscle building is ludicrous.

When I supplement with whey, post-workout is the only meal I have it. I just make my meals with whole foods which in my opinion, tastes better.
    Doesn't make sense.

Assuming you eat six or more meals per day, you can get away with having whey at three different times daily
This is perhaps the most bizarre line of the entire article. Two meals, six meals, whatever meals, it doesn't matter. What matters is your calorie intake over the day. And what does 'get away with having whey at three different times daily' mean? He said earlier that he drinks it post-workout, but suddenly claims you can get away with consuming it three times a day, as if it's a naughty little treat.

For the record, you don't need to take whey protein three times a day!

There are other comments which are also utter rubbish (not to mention the word 'digestability') but the general message is to please not read this and take on board what it says. There's a great deal of valuable, accurate information on this site. The OP in this article was red for a reason, he is wrong on so many counts.
    Accept difference. Not indifference.

Now i'm making the errors. The OP claims that most athletes consume 30g of whey protein per day. There is just no way of knowing that - in fact, I know of Olympic cyclists who don't use whey at all and in fact swear by jam sandwiches prior to a workout.

I originally thought that the OP was referring to protein in general.
