Not usually. I suppose if they were baked with 100% whole wheat flour they could be, but the ones you're describing are just like eating white bread.

Not if they are made with white flour. You also have to watch out for trans fats and sodium content.

I ate them when I first started my diet then when I got down about 10 pounds I gradually moved away from them because of the carbs and the high sodium content.

Their main ingredient (in most cases) is enriched bleach flour. It is not optimal and a higher GI/GL

Snyders of Hanover has Wheat Flour as their first ingredient. No problem with this at all, just eat them sparingly, not a whole bag.

Wheat flour in the ingredients doesn't mean much. Because if it is processes too much then it is just like white flour. Hell, the many ingredient in red vines is wheat flour but look at there GI index.

    to answer the original question....

YES, pretzels are complex carbs. Everyone here needs to udnerstand there is a difference between having a high GI and simple/complex carbs.

Yes, white flour is actually a "complex" carbohydrate, however, if your thinking is complex=healthy, simple=unhealthy, then you need to classify pretzels as being simple carbohydrates. Based on your question, my first reponse to this thread was to say that pretzels aren't complex carbs. My assumption is that your thinking reflects the above equation. Bottom line, stay away from pretzels, unless you're using them for a pwo insulin response, when a protein/simple sugar recovery shake would be far superior anyway. The white flour used to bake most pretzels will convert to glucose rapidly and will trigger a large insulin release.

Royal Gold makes this honey wheat twist pretzels. The main ingredient is whole wheat so they are a better source of carbs than regular pretzels. Plus, they taste bomb-diggity! You can find then at safeway but be warned, they are addicting!

If I recall properly, complex carbs are jsut longer chain molecules than simple carbs. I wouldn't know if they classify them as a complex or simple. But I know that there GI index is high so I am sure that they do not have high ratios of soluble fiber or insoluble fiber which is on of the things that is usually indicative of a longer chain of molecules.
