For people who've never lifted a weight in their life...

What is the approx./standard weight they would be able to bench the first time they try.

Would putting up 185 be rare to do?

it all entirely depends on age/weight and the persons activity level, coupled with their genetics, everyone is different. honestly it doesnt matter how much you can bench as long as your making progress

incredibly rare. I'd be surprised if a non-lifter could get 100 up.

you would probably seriously hurt yourself. not to mention you wouldn't even want to try to max out if you've never lifted before because your tendons are in worse shape than your muscles and you'll most likely hurt them.

Back in 8th grade, I did the bar a few times at 125lbs. Most people arent a whole lot stronger at first. Benching 95lbs as a raw beginner is quite good.

Also factor in the force propriorception and the fact the CNS has never had to relay action potentials and engage as many motor units before in a position you take on the bench press. 185lbs would just plummet straight down to the ribcage and crack it.

Just to clarify, this all came about in a Basketball board, when Kevin Durant couldn't bench 185. Then a guy said that the first time he benched, he put up 185, without any prior experience. He did it when he was 16, and he weighed 180 pounds.

PShtaa. First time I benched, I was 13, at 85 pounds, and popped out 125. I did 135, but I'm convinced the coach helped me a lot on that rep, so I don't credit it.

The thing is that most people (especially males) have done pushups at some point in their life. Granted: it's different from the bench press, and very few people are pushing the equivalent of 185 when they do a pushup. But when they do things like this, they still use the same muscles. However, everybody is at a different level, even if untrained. I imagine there to be a lot of variance in different kinds of strength within the 'untrained' population. This is the reason why it's silly to assume that everybody starts off at the same point.

Most of my guy friends, who have never benched in there life, THINK they can bench a metric ****ton (of course - "a lot more than you"). They fail to realise how weak ones chest is if you have never benched before. I could do 30 pushups in a minute, and when I got to the bench press for the first time I could only do like 10 reps of 70 pounds

The first time I ever BARBELL bench, I maxed out at 205, but I had 2 years of working out on my total gym, and I had a set of 50lbs dumbells, and I worked my way up to 30 reps on that, and I've had alot of experiance in working out in my brother's apartment complex gym(which consisted of a bunch of machines) And I weighed 190, and I was 16.

i have this fat friend who fails his push ups every time theres an army physical fitness test, yet he benched 205 3 times on his first ever outing. my weightlifting partner has been lifting for 6 months now and only gets 205 4 or 5 times, and it took a cycle of d-bol to get him there.

I benched 185lbs for 4 reps in my first attempt at 16 years old (and i was 180lbs or so) ... however, i must say i was very active as a kid playing alot of different sports. Even though i didnt exactly weight train... i kinda felt that playing those sports help in my initial strength.
