15 lbs dumbbells.. enough to help me build mass!?

Ok I'm loving the dumbbells I got! I've only been working out for a week but already my body feels great!! You can't really see anything yet!! Plus I got all the excercises from this site for building muscle mass. Well the weights I got were 15 lbs.. there pretty heavy for me... speaking that I'm so puny & skinny right now anyway! Should those be enough to help me gain muscle mass!? Because don't laugh.. the reason I wasn't gaining weight or muscle or anything is because the last ones I had were only 2.5 lbs which is pretty weak! Even I could pick those up without a problem.. So how long should I do my excercises a day... Is an hour too much?? Also.. is it good to eat before or after working out??

Lmao... U need some seriously heavy weights to bulid mass. I do 40's and my arms are only 13.5 inches... it takes time.I recommend you do barbell curls.

I am also planning to buy 2x12 dumbells. And i think they are fine for a starter.

MrMarcus, what exercises you do for building mass. Please share with me as i am in a same state as you are.

    Oh man.... LMAO.
First of all what are you stats? If you are serious about bbing you should look into getting a cheap BB/DB set, Im pretty sure you can find a cheap 100lb Vinyl BB set somewhere (like maybe walmart). Also 15lbs may be heavy for your arms, but I seriously doubt you can use them for other parts of your body. HAHHAHA Are you gonna be benching 30lbs?

if you absolutly cannot make it to a gym and cannot afford weights for home, look into alternatives such as chair dips, pullups off of your garage/roof, etc. Be creative and keep track. of course using this method will not give you good hypertrophy gains, but it's better than nothing.

Why would you ask someone who has only been working out for a week for advice?

The question was if they would help him build muscle mass, not if they are good for a beginner. If you can only do a few curls with a 5 lbs dumbbell, then that's what you should use as a beginner. Everyone's gotta start somewhere. But there's no way you're gonna build any sort of mass with 5 lb or 15 lb weights.

LOL... Keep in mind that I'm 5'11 & weigh 165 lbs... LOL I thought 15 lbs was pretty heavy but at the same time not too heavy.. I am skinny & I mean skinny. My arms are like freaking toothpicks. So I think this was pretty good for starters like me. I play no sports whatsoever so working out is my best option. Plus me... trying to pick heavier weights wouldn't help me for now anyway... I just want to get a little bigger... Not like Arnold or some big bulky man... Enough for you to see that I've gotten big somewhat! I really don't see what's so funny since I am a beginner... You'd expect me to start of on something really big? Wouldn't that be straining to me.

As for building body.... the excercises I've been doing vary from the ones on the list of excercise pages... I've been doing alot of them... Look under compound excercises! With dumbbells.

I suggest buying adjustable dumbbells so you can make them whatever weight you want for whatever exercise, and no need to buy new dumbbells! Just buy new plates.

5'11 165 isnt THAT skinny, especially not skinny enough to where 15lbs would be a significant amount of weight. Seriously though, I can understand if 15lbs is enough for your biceps/triceps/forearms, but theres no way its going to be enough for other parts of your body including your chest, shoulders, back and legs. Even if you only plan on working your arms (which is retarded), 15lbs will get really easy to lift after awhile.

So in short : BUY MORE WEIGHTS!

I agree with these other guys that you should at least buy an adjustable dumbbell. While 15 lbs may seem like alot now, you'll be moving up at a very fast rate, especially as a beginner. Rather than buying a new set of dumbbells every couple of weeks, buy one that adjusts up to at least 50 lbs to save yourself some extra cash.

Im 5'10 and 150 lbs so we are pretty similar. Ive been at it for two months, started doing curls with 15 and am already at 20.... so 15 is definately good for starters but that is only for curls. Even with tricep extensions I need at least 40 lbs so your going to need more weight.

15LB's for what is the question..

The 15's are heavy when I do cuban rotations cause its at the very end of my shoudler routine. ANd your not supposed to go heavy anyway..

15's are also the weight I use for the first set of reverse flyes...

for shoulder pressing? Not even a warm up..

15lbs are not going to get you anywhere at all.....Maybe just for an aerobic workout.....and how do you plan on training your legs with just 15lb DB's? You can't ignor your legs and do those damn arm curls all day.

With bench.....30lb max bench sounds weak even for a super ectomorph who never worked out...its not enough and there is no way around it, but to get some more equipment, it shouldn't even be a question.

remember hes still a beginner, you can start off by doing weightless squats to work out your legs 3 sets of 30 reps.
and for biceps do hammer curls, bicep curls, concentration curls.
Triceps you can do tricep extensions, lying on the floor skull crushers, table/chair dips(where your hands are behind you and you put your legs on a chair or something), Forearms, you can do wrist curls, and get a broom and tie a rope and weight to it, then roll it up. Chest, you can do floor flys, between the chair push ups, pushups and dips. For shoulders you can do side raises, seated bentover raises, front raises, reverse flys. ANd pull ups for the back, situps, side bends for the abs and obliques. Then eventually youll need to join a gym. I know when i started i could barely do 10 push ups, had trouble curling 20lbs, and couldnt even do 40 weightless squats. And you shouldnt workout the same bodypart everyday. Maybe try a split, like
    Mon - Chest\triceps
    Tue - Back\biceps
    Wed - abs\obliques
    Thur - shoulders
    Fri - Legs
