my old athletic director once said, "If you can bench your body weight 20 times then you are considered STRONG." can anybody here do that or have any thoughts? i did 185x12 but that was it, and i weigh 180

No - You need to bench your bodyweight to be consider "strong" for your height. Strength is measured by Height:Weight Ratio.

I've always heard that you should be able to bench your body weight. Doesnt matter how many times.

Hahaha, According to this a 150lb man should bench 150X20 which gives him an estimated 1RM of 320lb!!!
Now that is possible but only by the most elite powerlifters and Steroid users, Correct me if I am wrong.

i think you can do it without roids, if you have enough dedication to it and you always work hard, i think that within time it owuld be possble. and besided, i could be wrong here too, with that weight and that many reps to estimate 320, that could fluxuate alot of weight for a one rep max.

I will not correct you beacuse you are right my friend : ).
Like I said strength is measured in a Hight: Weight Ratio. Example - ATwo guys are 5'10''. One guy weights 160lbs and the other guy weights 190lbs - Now factore in the %BF (Rmember Fat does not help to push weights around). In this example both guys have a %BF of 10%. Who is stronger?
Here is a test for you -
Guy A- 12%BF, 5'9'' , 200lb
Guy B- 9%BF, 6', 220lb
Who will be stronger?

Sounds like a very generic sort of theory.

I think strength is triple bw deads
Ora chine with more then 100lbs attached, or maybe a dip with that.
Strong could be benching 225x10, 500x5, 800x1.
Its kinda hard question to answer. I barely bench 286x2 yet I can hold 700 pounds in my hands.
What do you think strength is.
I say a triple bw dead. or a full clean and jerk.

Strength is not always determined by how much muscle you have. It is hugely a factor of anatomy and how your body is built. Another factor is simply how well you are able to use those muscles. Building strength is mostly a factor of getting your body used to the stress of the weights and the ability to recruit more muscle fibers.
Basically, there is no way to tell if guy A or Guy B is stronger.

I would say for bench, benching about 1.5-1.7x your bodyweight would be considered strong(I mean for about 5 reps), and benching twice your bodyweight for about 5 reps would be a very respectable milestone.
As far as most compound exercises go, I think you should be able to do your bodyweight atleast once. This kindof relates in a way but, I always thought you should be always be able to do atleast do one pull up, because if your in a sitauation where you're hanging for your life, you couldn't even pull yourself up.
