    What does on and off season mean?

    This may sound stupid but I always hear a fitness comp. refering to there off season diet and routine and ther on season routine. Wouldnt' you keep the same routine year round?
    Why do they have to do a off season routine?

    Off-season you wouldn't be trying to maintain a very low body fat percentage, and try gaining some muscle mass before you have to trim the fat again.

    If you tried to maintain a low bodyfat year round, most couldn't gain much, if any, lean mass.

    At least that's my understanding of it.

    Gaining sloppy weight during the winter and having good weight during on season,tone ripped up etc.

    I would say yes, but the terms off and on season is more applicable to people that compete. They would bulk, or not train as much, off-season, and stay lean on-season.
