What, exactly, does a belt do?
This sounds like a very noob question but i have to ask. I've been lifting for about 2 1/2 years and i never have used a belt. I now do 315 for reps when squating so i figured i'd go ahead and invest in a belt so i don't hurt myself.
Well, i was at Sports Authority just kinda wandering around and i saw some belts and i decided to try one on to see what it was like. It was a good one, cow hide with double prongs and padded back, and i pulled it about as tight as i could. I didn't really feel anything. I went through the motions of squatinf and deadlifts but it didn't feel like it stopped me from doing anything (i purposely motion a really bad form dead lift and the belt did nothing to stop me) and it didn't really feel like it would support to much for squating.
So, i was just wondering before i wasted $25, do you really only feel it if you use weight or something, or are belts just kinda like a placebo effects, everyone "knows" they make you safer so people in turn feel safer.
Thanks

It gives extra support to your midsection. Making it easier to keep a straight back and also allowing for elevated gastrointestinal pressure (not sure of the implications of this, I just read it somewhere).

Ok, it's like this...
Imagine you're trying to a pop a balloon.
Then...
Imagine trying to pop a balloon with a belt around it...
Exactly...

A balloon does not have a spine that is stabilized by the extra pressure.
