    Drug death statistics.

This info was from another board but had to post here .

DAWN (drug awareness warning network), the CDC, and SAMHSA

    Deaths in 2002

    430,000 from tobacco
116,113 from alcohol, almost ¼ were drunk driving accidents, 32% of those were from binge drinking (been guilty of that one,, lol)
200,000 from prescription and over the counter drug interactions
0 steroid deaths, I looked everywhere and could not find 1 death attributed to steroids, but I could be wrong

emergency room visits from drug use stats for 2002

    Acetaminophen (Tylenol) — 28,720 (Ranked 8th)
    Alcohol— 207,395 (Ranked 1st)
    Marijuana — 119,362 (Ranked 3rd)
    Aspirin — 7,494 (25th)
    Fluoxetine (Prozac) — 5,770 (29th)
    ********** (*****) — 27,659 (9th)
    Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) — 5,430 (32nd)
    Ibuprofen (Advil) — 15,867 (14th)
    Oxycodone (OxyContin) — 14,996 (15th)
    Naproxen (Aleve) — 4,576 (35th)
    Caffeine — 1,999 (59th)
    Amoxicillin — 830 (89th)
    Codeine — 1,237 (73rd)
    Hydrocodone — 2,420 (51st)
    Morphine — 2,775 (48th)
    Ephedrine — 1,033 (79th)
    Prednisone — 348 (137th)
    Multivitamin with Minerals — 376 (131st)
    Herbal Products — 415 (126th)
    Metformin — 505 (116th)
    ******* — 199,198 (2nd)
    Heroin — 93,519 (4th)
    Androgens/Anabolic Steroids — 319 (142nd)

these numbers came from 3 different sources and were offical government stats on deaths and emergency room visits. Here are some numbers per 100,000 people to make it more reflective.

0.796 visits per 100,000 users a year for caffeine
13.3 visits per 100,000 users of steroids (remember these are almost all related to infections)
9.64 visits per 100,000 users of alcohol
1.91 visits per 100,000 users of tylonol
    25.001 visits per 100,000 users of *******
89.9 users per 100,000 die from smoking each year

smoking is more deadly than ******* use,,, this is a scarey stat.

Obesity closes gap on CDC death list

    Published Wednesday, March 10, 2004
WASHINGTON (AP) - More Americans soon will be dying of obesity than from smoking if current trends persist, which would make being fat the nation’s No. 1 cause of preventable death, the government says.

A poor diet and physical inactivity caused 400,000 deaths in 2000, a 33 percent jump over 1990, said a study released yesterday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tobacco-related deaths in the same period climbed by less than 9 percent to 435,000 as the gap between the two narrowed substantially. At this rate, obesity will claim the top spot, the report said.

"Our worst fears were confirmed," said Julie Gerberding, the CDC’s director and an author of the study.

An ad campaign that begins today tells viewers they can lose midsection love handles and double chins one step at a time if they eat less and exercise more.

"We’re just too darn fat, ladies and gentlemen, and we’re going to do something about it," Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson said at a news conference.

Thompson, a fierce anti-smoking advocate who has trimmed his own waistline since coming to Washington, drew parallels between the drives to stop smoking and to get Americans to eat less and exercise more.

"We’re so busy with our lives we use fast foods more often as not. We don’t cook as a family any more. We don’t exercise," Thompson said today on NBC’s "Today" show. "As a result of that, we’re getting too darn fat."

"It’s a difficult fight, but we all have to partake in it," he said, citing a recent move by McDonald’s Corp. to drop its "Supersize" french fries as among a host of actions the food industry has taken, including greater package labeling, at the prodding of the government.

The Bush administration wants to cut funding for the VERB campaign, a CDC project to promote physical activity among 9- to 13-year-olds, from $36 million this year to $5 million in 2005.

Gerberding said the program has resulted in a 30 percent increase in exercise among those children.

While Congress rejected limits on lawsuits against tobacco companies, the House will debate a bill today that would shield restaurants and fast food franchises from lawsuits seeking to blame them for obesity and health problems related to it.

The legislation was prompted by the fast-food industry’s complaints about a rash of lawsuits that fault their food for Americans’ bulging bellies.

"If you eat a lot of food and you get sick, it’s your responsibility and not the restaurant’s," said House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas.

McDonald’s has announced it will end Supersize fries and drinks except for special promotions in its more than 13,000 U.S. restaurants by year’s end.

Several soft-drink makers also have announced plans to offer a larger number of healthier products.

The CDC study is the latest in a line of research that documents widespread weight gain and its consequences among Americans from children to the elderly.

The researchers analyzed data from 2000 for the leading causes of death and for those preventable factors known to contribute to them. Like tobacco, obesity and inactivity increase the risks for the top three killers: heart disease, cancer and such cerebrovascular ailments as strokes.

Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle also strongly increase the risk of diabetes, the sixth leading cause of death.

The results appear in today’s Journal of the American Medical Association.

The Food and Drug Administration also is expected to issue a report on obesity this week. The FDA has been considering whether to require restaurants to provide more nutrition information and change nutrition labels on food sold in grocery stores and other outlets to help consumers...

Reading numbers like that always makes me wonder when something will be done about the obesity problem. It's time to stop being politically correct and worrying about hurting someones feelings. This report says obesity is closing the gap, however I was under the impression that heart disease (closely related to obesity) was the number 1 killer. We can pass laws requiring us to wear seatbelts but any fat person can buy a couple of dozen krispy kremes. I am only partially kidding.

LOL A nanny - state socialist? Bro I am so frigging far from that you actually made me LOL sitting here at the keyboard. You missed my point entirely. We all ready have so many big brother, restrictive, "it's bad for you so you are not allowed to do it" laws and regulations as it is. But the serious issues no one wants to address, and no, I am not talking about fat people buying doughnuts. Good one, though. Just to let you know in case you want to package me in a nice box, I am more of a conservative republican who believes in less government and more free enterprise. Thanks again for the good laugh.

how the hell could Marijuana kill 119,362 people a year. Your statistics are ****in flawed because I am sure there are no deaths contributed directly to marijuana consumption. Unless it is laced and that would be a different story.

It's your reading comprehension that's flawed. Look again, that's ER visits, not deaths.

I suppose accidents while under the influence are one possibility. While dope never impaired my driving to the extent that booze did, it nevertheless did impair it. If you doubt that, then you probably wouldn't have any objection to the next airline flight you take having a stoned pilot, or the next operation you or those close to you have being performed by a stoned surgeon.

The emergency room visits for drug abuse are such a crock of sh*t! Part of the Reefer Madness program of the current administration is to give young kids a choice between incarceration or admitting they are drug dependant. Then they have to go to a hospital to have themselves tested. Eventually they land in a treatment center such as the Faith Based drug rehab programs which are sucking up tens of millions of wasted dollars. That and the change in statistics wherin now as opposed to earlier statistics, if you enter the ER for ANY type of treatment and are found to have had any exposure, strong or slight, recent or not and germaine to the actual cause of the visit or not, ....it NOW counts as a drug related visit!

Apropos of legal vs recreational drugs, I found this humorous but sadly true article from the San Fran Chronicle....

    Easy fella.

First, the original post referred to *emergency room* visits. "Going to a hospital to have yourself tested" hardly constitutes a trip to the ER. A hospital is a big place and Emergency Rooms are for, well, emergencies. A routine drug test is in no ones definition of an emergency.

I find one drug not listed and I know in my state, I am sure it is no 1 on the list for ER visits. Anyone hear of meth?? The Gov hasn't or I missed it on the list. We have people that are rotting away on the stuff.
This is how addicting this drug is, and example.
One of the main ingredients is anhydrous amonia. Farmers use it and it is stored in pressure tanks. This is in a liquid/gas form and is very cold. It will freeze your skin on contact. Well they steal the stuff out of these tanks and every so often, they screw up.
We had a guy in our county that sprayed himself in the groin and froze his unit off if you know what I mean.
A couple months later after he was arrested doing the very same thing. It is that addictive.
    starting over!!!!!!!!!!

Hands down the funniest (yet true) thing I've read all week.

I guess GWB is also to blame for all these evil statistics, ER visits, and hospitals visits. And cloudy days and ugly babies, and blah, blah, blah........

You're right. Amphetamines are mysteriously absent from this list.
    I'll mess with Texas.

In that case, you'll probably also enjoy this one:

"If you were setting a half-bright trap to collect a half-bright menagerie, you couldn't do better than saying 'Reagan won the Cold War' and waiting to see who argues with you. It's the intellectual equivalent of a box, a stick and a piece of cheese."

(Now that's a woman that could seriously make me consider abandoning the freestyle bachelor life)
