I agree with Dom of course, but deep down I truley feel that DOMS means
something, even if we don't know exactly what.
-DOMS results from eccentric overload, which has been proven to increase protein synthesis and muscle hypertrophy more than concentric alone.
-DOMS results from stretch overload in the muscles, which has been shown (in animals) to induce hyperplasia, and is shown to be a greater muscle builder than peak contraction exercises.
-DOMS results from lack of adaptation(i.e. changing reps, exercises, volume, frequency), all of which are key to preventing homeostasis.
-DOMS
could be a result of microtrauma to the sarcolemma, which allows Calcium ions to enter, triggering a cascade of inflammatory responses, including the donation of new cells and various hormonal growth factors(IGF-1, MGF, etc.)
To me, DOMS seems to accompany growth. When you first start training, you get sore...and grow.
When you plateau, you change your routine around, you get sore again...you grow.
These could all very well be coincidences, and it shouldn't be your sole focus. It's obvious, like Dom said, that people are growing without it. I just don't think it should be written off as meaningless, especially considering nobody knows for sure what it's Cause/Effects truely are.
