running in place
Is running in place essentially the same thing as running on a treadmill. Will it produce fat loss if done for 1 hour per day? I would think that is more close to real running than running on a treadmill.
Thanks

WOW that would be boring LOL. And no, it wouldn't give you the same results, because it's a completely different range of motion, you're not moving, you don't incorporate your arms as much, and a lot of other reasons. If you wanna do something in place, jump rope. :-)

You may be able to do that once and then you will never do it again unless you are the most disciplined person on the face of this earth. I would rather dig my eyes out with my fingers then have to go through that sort of torture more then once.

not unless you have a tv in front of you. Thats the idea; watching a movie while running in place.

LOL I really just don't recommend it. It's not like running; running in place is more like a high-knee movement, unless you do it lazily just kicking your legs back a bit. It's not the same as running, it's quite jerky, and it'd be uncomfortable on the floor.

I tried that once and last for about 2 minutes before I got too bored even while listening to my favorite music. I'll say though, I did workup a decent sweat in those two minutes and it got my heartrate going at a decent pace but as the other members said, it's like taking cardio and making it even more monotonous. I have enough trouble just getting myself to do cardio every day let alone something that's incredibly boring and a waste of time IMO.

thats what stationary bikes are for.
it comes down to this: are you really trying to lose fat, or are you really trying to get better at running in place? if you want to make a serious change in your life you are going to have to take things seriously. go outside. lift weights. make better food choices. the only way running in place can help you is if it convinces you really start trying.

I think running in place sounds like a great idea if you want to lose fat.
If you plan on watching 1-2 hours of TV/movies, and you manage to run in place for that long, you are essentially doing lots of ~medium impact cardio. Even if you take breaks, keeping it up for a few hours sounds like an awesome cardio workout. It is easy, convenient, and enjoyable (you watch TV).
Stationary bike is the other option, but maybe you don't have the room or money for it. Also, sitting on a bike seat for that long might make your soft spots uncomfortable.
If it works for you, go for it. Yeah, maybe there are better ways, but the important thing is to find something you WILL do, and DO it.

Why not just go outside?
If you're like unable to go outside due to allergies or something try jumpign rope.

just jump rope for a few intense 2 minute rounds and you will be far better off. Running in place is much farther from real running than running on a treadmill but much closer to jumping rope. Jumping rope has added upper body benefits and will be more difficult to slack off while doing.

When I was 70 lbs+ overweight, I started my transformation by running in place.
At the time I was living at home. So I would go downstairs after midnight and just start jogging in place in the main living room next to the TV. At the time I had no gym workout equipment, and knew NOTHING about fitness. And I was too ashamed of my body to go running in public...
For what it's worth, I am one of the few people who DID manage to keep it up, for a few months at that. What started out at a couple of minutes worked all the way up to two full hours of running in place. I would usually put a movie in the recorder to unofficially time myself.
I know it's not the sexiest fitness method going, but it worked for me. Every single night I would go to bed sweating very heavily, and feeling completely refreshed. I'm sure it did wonders for my cardiovascular abilities. And it definitely aided my weight loss efforts (once you've done it for a while, the last thing you will want to do is overeat).
If you can, it is probably better to start off running outside (I would do so in hindsight); it really is a different league to running in place. Even if you can only manage 50 yards, do it...and then aim for 51 yards the next time. You will build up your mileage a lot quicker than you think. But otherwise, I have nothing but GOOD memories of running in place; if you're starting out, a little self-conscious, and looking to boost your exercise levels, then I have only great things to say about it.

I used this method of running place a couple of years ago...this was my usual schedule
MWF:
Run in place for 30 mins after waking
Run in place for 30 mins after work
1 hr at the gym
T&R:
RIP- 30 mins AM
RIP- 30 mins after work
RIP- 30 mins around 8 or 9 pm
Sat & Sun:
were off days but I would run in place whenever I could usually in the morning.
I ended up losing 40 lbs in about 5 months, I started at 222 and lightest I was around 180...but I wasn't eating healthy...I ended up gaining most of it back but I had stopped working out...I am currently just eating six small meals a day around 2-3 hrs a day and trying to keep my calories under 2000 and lifting at least 4 times a week and doing some form of cardio a couple times a week...I started at 216 and am currently at 196 its been about 2 months....hoping to get down to 180 again and this time eat correctly and lift hardcore...I would try the running in place but it has gotten too boring for me, I try for tennis or bball or bike riding now. Good luck with your work out plan hope I gave you a little bit of insight.
