I know people who have competed in IronMans, but I have no first hand experience.

Have you gone to www.ironman.com? I'm assuming so...but it seemed like they had a lot there. But the last time I checked that site it was because we were tracking a co-worker during work, so we didnt' really check it out too much and I'm not sure what all else is on that site. Hopefully a forum or link to a forum.

And isn't there a magazine geared toward triathletes? They may have forums at a related site. I'd probably check endurance sport forums over this one, though.

i'm a triathlete but have not done an iron man. if you are starting from scratch you are talking years of training. start with a sprint distance and learn how to do the even well....transitions, nutrition, keeping your heart rate down. then work up to olympic distance and half-ironman distance. also, if you haven't run a marathon or done a century ride (100mile bike ride) you don't need to be considering an iron man at this point. i've been doing multisport for a little over a year now and will do my first half-iron man this fall. i aim to do a full ironman in fall 2008. i have run 1 marathon, 2 half marathons and done countless smaller events...i will also run another marathon this fall.

sorry to ramble but the point i'm trying to make is that the ironman triathlon is not something you can just decide you want to do and go out an do it 2 months later. training wisely!!! it's one hell of an event!!

x-husband did t he ironman. when he did it he was three years out of the marines and when he was in the marines he trained with navy seals. His work was very understanding and would let him take 3 or 4 hours lunches to ride his bike. He could not eat enough (wish I had that problem)He looked like a skeleton. He did very well in the event. He was already an expert swimmer
and very type A.

Do you have any specific questions?

Thanks for replying! Believe me, I'm very much aware that it's not something you can just wake up and say "I think I'll go do the ironman today". This is something I eventually want to try to work up to & realize that I'm nowhere near prepared at this point. I watched the ironman on tv last year and I just knew that it was something I wanted to do one day...after much training of course

No he did not have anyone helping him specificaly. He certainly read alot
and followed a preset plan but did not have a "trainer" if that is what you
mean. As far as diet he just really ate everything in sight and still could
not keep any weight on. I remember him waking up in the middle of the night and being so hungry and getting up and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

I am sure you can get a book with suggested training schedules.

Yeah! I've done 2

Jessica,

I have attempted the Ironman 3 times and finished twice. I did IronmanUSA in Lake Placid, NY in 2002, 2004 and 2006 (dropped out at mile 11 of run due to dehyration and ended up in the medical tent with IV lines stuck in my arm). I am planning to go back in 2008, as I have unfinished business on that course.

Here is my take on them...

1) Anyone in reasonable shape can do them with proper training
2) You need about 24 weeks to prepare from a good base
3) You will need to train 14-20 hours per week depending where you are in your training.
4) You need some cash, it ain't cheap. Entry fees are $425, plus you will need to travel to the event and most motel/hotels in IM villages have 5-night minimums. Plus, you will need a wetsuit for the swim and a good (not necessarily great bike) which can add up. However, in my opinion it is money well spent.
5) As far as training goes, there are a plethora of training plans that can be followed. I have provided some links below. Also, many towns/cities have triathlon clubs, I suggest you join yours, you will get many good tips from the veterans.

Here are some links for you:
www.ironmanusa.com
www.ironmanlive.com
www.trainingpeaks.com
www.cruciblefitness.com
www.multisports.com
www.markallenonline.com

Hearing the words... "Jim you are an IRONMAN" when I crossed the finish line and the crowd going insane, still gives me chills when I think about it.

Do it! - you won't regret it! However, the races sell out very, very fast - some within hours of registration opening up.

I would be happy to talk to you more about it.

Maybe you should try a Duathlon first to get your "feet wet" and then do a TRI.

I just completed a Duathlon and it was a lot of fun.

I'd love to start tri - ironman would be mega but something that is way off training wise. I'm fine on a bike. Swimming is coming along and running is ok. Just need to find some cash to buy a bike.......

Welcome to the life of a runner! I'm not trying to sound like a betoch, but you will have many of those. Just wait till your toes turn black and blue and you no longer have nails. Also, you may want to check your socks and shoes. If you are wearing cotton socks, a major no-no! You want dry-fit or climate socks. Also, you want some "play room" in your shoes. Your feet need room to breathe. My running shoes are always a half a size larger than my dress shoes. I would also buy some New Skin for your blusters. If you don't let them heel, they will constantly bleed.

I was wearing dryfit socks, but I made a rookie mistake of wearing new shoes on race day.

ITA! My regular shoes are an 8.5 womens, and my running shoes for marathons are 10. I LOVE the Injinji toe socks; because each toe has it's own "sock" there is no rubbing and no blisters! They have gotten me through many 20 milers and marathons and I never have to worry about blisters like I used to. Also, Body Glide is this stuff that comes in a stick like deodorant but you can put anywhere you have chafing if you know beforehand the spots you usually chafe. Guys I run with put it on their nipples, I put it on my feet in between toes and around arches before the socks and shoes go on, and where my sports bra usually chafes me. It's a lifesaver!
