Seems like there are many other carb sources of lower GI. Legumes, beans, rye breads, fiberous cereals (fiber one and bran stuff), corn, etc.
I see oats as good, cheap carbs when bulking, but maybe there are better alternatives when cutting? Or am I missing something?

Wow, even my mother can come up with better reasons for me to eat stuff.
Oats are 55-70 GI. All the other carbs I mentioned above are lower... most also have less fat. Seriously, WHY?

Yes, there are many carb sources you can play around with. Oats are good for you but so are other carb sources like whole grain bread, watermelon, oranges, apples, bananas, and even potatoes. If you're worried about an insulin spike during cutting, always eat balanced meals w/ protein and some healthy fats along with the carbs so insulin is balanced out which means less fat storage of carbs. Bottom line, Complex carbs are all good...

I eat oats while cutting because they are the most filling meal I have ever eaten for breakfast. They oatmeal also readily mixes with the whey powder I want to eat in the morning as well. For me the combo of the whey and oatmeal is the winner for breakfast. I have been eating this for about 8 months or so and so far awesome results.
SW: 305 lbs (June 15th, 2003)
CW: 186.5 lbs (Aug 9th, 2004)

2nd GW: 190 lbs met May 31, 2004

There is no magic pill, just lots of hard work and dedication.

Please explain to me about "GI". What does it stand for; why is it good for you; when is the best time to have it, and from what?
Thank you.

Beans (black, red, chickpea, etc) are about as low as you can get on the Glycemic Index with lots of carbs and protein and virtually no fat. I personally enjoy a pound of black beans every day.
My favorite carb sources:
oats
beans
brown rice
100% stoneground whole wheat
I include all of these in every meal plan, whether cutting or bulking. In my opinion, cutting doesn't mean leaving out carbs, it means leaving out calories.
