I've done 5 x 4 for Chest and it took me forever to get results.

I try to keep my reps at a minimum of 6 with heavy weights and then try to burst out another rep or two on the last set.

I would do 6x3 if you were looking to improve your strength numbers.

Yeah its great, I've done it.
What I did was that I did 6x3 of an exercise and once I could manage it, I moved up to 6x4 with the same weight and then ultimately worked myself up to 6x6. This was great for strength gains.

I do a lot of 10x3 with very short rest periods and it works like a charm.

I do that, then I add 5lbs every week. After 4 weeks add 5lbs and do 5•2 for 4 weeks then 7•1 with my max but could only do that for 2 weeks.

Good for both providing you have a sound diet and keep rest periods short.
