The very very highly regarded sports trainer and strength and conditiioning coach uses a ton of thick bar bench press with us football players. Why does he do that? What benefit for football does it have and is my regular barbell a signifigant amount higher or wat?

I am just guessing, but my gym has two thicknesses of bars. One is still 45lbs, but very thin and it bends with just 225lbs. I do not use this bar, because it makes it easier. For example if you use this for Flat Bench Press, it is too easy to make it bounce off of your chest, so you are really cheating yourself out of an efficient workout.
I use the thick bar (45lbs, too), so that there is no bounce and so that it is more challenging.Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.
